Project Updates

“My project is to create a 3D model of a monkey's cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system. Currently, transporting drugs to the brain through the blood is remarkably tedious due to the blood brain barrier that blocks most substances in the blood from getting into the brain. We are, however, able to bypass this problem and transport drugs through the CSF.

Monkeys involved in CSF research are susceptible to pain and death. Growing up in Nigeria, monkeys were always one of my favorite animals to watch at the zoo, so I care very deeply about them getting hurt in experiments. My project is an alternative to this.

I am extremely grateful for a program like the GCSP, because it puts my entire education in meaningful perspective. In high school, I learned the importance of synthesizing all parts of an education, from the most science-oriented fields to the most liberal arts focused courses. I learned that all parts of an education are important – nothing is worthless –and I'm happy to carry this on in college.”

Project Details

Working in the lab, I have gained knowledge in 3D imaging computer programs such as Blender and ITK-SNAP. I aim to improve my skills in these programs and gain knowledge on the physiology of the central nervous system, where cerebrospinal fluid can be found.

I have taken a minor in psychology in addition to my major. As someone who is exceedingly interested in the human mind and how it works, this minor is a perfect way to increase my knowledge in such a fascinating field. Since my research is focused on the brain and its surroundings, it is equally important to understand human beings.

In addition to working with medical device companies through Dr. Martin's lab, I plan on attending the 2019 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) national conference, which I have been invited to in Detroit, Michigan, in March 2019. I also intend to run for an office in NSBE's chapter at the University of Idaho.

As an international student to the United States from Nigeria, I fully understand the importance of having a global perspective for the art of problem-solving. Living in the U.S. for the past four years, I have come to increasingly appreciate the importance of a cross-cultural perspective, and I plan on encouraging this concept through clubs like the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers.

I plan on continuing my volunteer program at the Moscow Public Library. This is an experience I've been involved with since my junior year of high school, and I am excited to continue helping out. As a book lover, I am thrilled to encourage kids down a similar path, inspiring a love for learning.

Grand Challenge Focus Area

Reverse Engineer the Brain

For decades, some of engineering’s best minds have focused their thinking skills on how to create thinking machines — computers capable of emulating human intelligence.
