Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

The University of Idaho Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) student chapter unites students by heritage, social responsibility and a desire to improve the equality of all people through the use of science and technology. SHPE values excellence in education, professional pursuits and leadership. Members obtain excellence through integrity, empowerment, achievement, diversity and continuous improvement.

Why should you be involved?
SHPE Members at the University of Idaho benefit from opportunities to:
  • Gain access to scholarships exclusively for SHPE members.
  • Network with other students, professionals and employers.
  • Meet hundreds of potential employers looking for interns and entry-level engineers at the SHPE National Conference.
  • Develop professional and leadership skills.

The U-Idaho chapter of SHPE was recognized as a student organization on April 10, 2008. The chapter was recognized nationally by the SHPE Board of Directors on June 6, 2008.

Funding and support comes from the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the College of Engineering.

SHPE Student Leadership:

Ignacio Lopez | President
3rd year Mechanical Engineering Student
"SHPE has proven to be invaluable in helping me develop my professional, as well as my interpersonal abilities through its various workshops and conferences. SHPE also provides culturally relevant leadership opportunities where members can easily help one another achieve their goals."

David Rico | Vice President
4th year Civil Engineering Student
"SHPE has endless opportunities for minorities. It allows students in STEM to envision a foreseeable future in their field."

Jose Lara | Secretary
4th year Civil Engineering Student
"One of the primary reasons I joined SHPE was to get the chance to interact with fellow classmates, share our ideas, and tutor the younger generations with their lower level engineering classes. Another reason was to start networking with professionals who are part of SHPE. I believe that networking is key in acquiring a job at times and it's a way to get mentorship and advise."

Ismael Medina | Treasurer
4th year Civil Engineering Student

Charles Guthrie| ESAC Representative
3rd year Civil Engineering Student
"I joined SHPE to expand my academic and social network, as it surrounds me with fellow students like myself."
