Research Proposals

The University of Idaho College of Engineering's Grants and Contract Specialist provides proposal development support to Engineering faculty, staff and students, shepherding their proposals throughout the proposal process. The Grants and Contract Specialist helps coordinate with the Sponsored Program Administrators (SPAs) in Pre-Award, Departmental Grant Administrators within Engineering and with other U of I academic and administrative entities.

The Grants and Contract Specialist performs those functions as desired for Engineering faculty at any point along the proposal process but is especially dedicated to ensuring that the technical aspects of the proposal meets the RFP requirements. Technical aspects of proposal submission include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing the budget and budget narrative/justification.
  • Representing PI’s interests during the pre-award process.
  • Troubleshooting throughout the proposal process.
  • Contacting funding solicitation officers for clarification.
  • Ensuring required forms are complete, accurate and defensible.
  • Coordinating subaward and subcontract documentation and submission.
  • Monitoring petty technical requirements (e.g., specified fonts and margins, etc.)

If you’d like assistance with a proposal, contact the Grants and Contract Specialist.

How is this different from ORED's Proposal Development Services?

The U of I Office of Research and Economic Development’s Office of Research and Faculty Development assists faculty with their proposals. Proposal Development Services are customized to meet the needs of the PI(s), including but not limited to:

  • Reviewing draft proposals
  • Assisting with planning and coordination of collaborative, multidisciplinary proposals
  • Providing training in locating and responding to funding solicitations

Research and Faculty Development (RFD) offers six levels of support, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Faculty may request proposal development services here.

  • Level 1: Funding Search
  • Level 2: Developing a Concept Paper and Contacting Program Officers
  • Level 3: Resubmission Strategizing
  • Level 4: Proposal Narrative Review
  • Level 5: Proposal Package Review
  • Level 6: Support for Large Interdisciplinary Proposals (Budgets less than $1 million)

RFD’s faculty development efforts include proposal writing seminars, workshops and training to help enhance the competitiveness of faculty proposal efforts. For more information please contact Research and Faculty Development.

These proposal support resources are intended as a guide to facilitate proposal development. It is the proposer’s responsibility to ensure that the funding solicitation requirements are satisfied in the response.
