J-1 Scholar Background Check Requirement Update
Effective April 2024, all incoming J-1 scholars must undergo a background check before an offer of employment is made. Please submit background check request tickets for all incoming J-1 scholars so that background checks can be run. Contact crimcheck@uidaho.edu with any questions.
University of Idaho requires all faculty, exempt and classified employees to pass a criminal background check and driving record check. This requirement supports the university’s goal of attracting, recruiting and retaining the best faculty and staff and helps to maintain a safe and secure working and learning environment for all.
The university requires criminal background checks on the successful candidate(s) for each faculty (including temporary faculty) and staff position recruitment, internal or external, as well as for non-student hourly employees, graduate student appointees, J-1 scholars and postdoctoral scholars. Criminal background checks for student workers, interns and volunteers are only required if their work involves significant contact with minors or the hiring authority determines the work to be security-sensitive. The university will also conduct criminal background checks on current employees as required for reclassifications and promotions.
The university also conducts periodic driving record checks for current employees who drive vehicles owned or rented by the university. Please refer to the Environmental Health and Safety office for more information.

Submit a Ticket
Please submit a background check request ticket for all inquiries, even if a candidate may already have a background check on file. We are unable to provide background check status in response to an email. A ticket must be submitted so the background check status review can be documented and so the background check team can initiate a background check if one is needed.
