McCall Field Campus: Celebrating Our History, Envisioning Our Future

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the McCall Field Campus Summer 21 Reunion!

We had a great time getting to know alumni from 1940s all the way to 2020 graduates. We celebrated with McCall community members and U of I supporters. We are grateful to everyone who shared their McCall stories and who shared their hopes for the future.

You can see photos from the event and read some of those stories below, as well as share your own.

Please visit our Giving Page to find out more about how you can support the College of Natural Resources and McCall Field Campus students, staff and faculty. Check back in often for more updates. We hope you’ll stay connected with us as we teach, learn and grow!

"My teaching and field experience at Camp played an important part in preparing me for a career as a forest scientist, lecturer, and forestry consultant. I am pleased to see that the McCall facility is being used for "MOSS" to educate and inspire students."

- Jess Daniels, Ph.D. (1963 – 1966, graduate student, teaching assistant, and forestry instructor.)

"I went to MOSS worried that I would have to choose between being a scientist or an educator in order to make a greater impact on my community and then I learned that I can authentically do both to help more young people feel connected to science and the world around them. Going to school and living on the edge of Payette Lake was an incredible experience to grow as a person, a student, and a professional!"

- Carmen DeLeon (MOSS Graduate Student, ‘13)

"Changed my life. I learned about the west, wild fires, smoke jumpers, hot shots bringing your first aid kit with your very first group, campfires, REAM, bats, wolverines and so much more. Like Settlers of Catan, Big Bang Theory in Cooks Cabin, Yurtville band, crocheting, knitting and then Foresters, Trivia nights at SRB. So many adventures!"

- Laura Kostenblatt (Graduate Student, ‘12)

U of I Field Campus, nestled in Ponderosa State Park, is a magical place. For participants/campers, it provides the comforts of home with home cooked meals, dormitory-style cabins with bunks, showering and bathroom facilities, classrooms, group play areas, and the beautiful outdoors of the west central mountains of Idaho. UI’s Field Campus is a sacred place which needs to be protected and treasured for many generations to come."

- Cindi Feeley

"'Right of Passage' is accurate! Memories: Forest Mensuration, Forest Ecology, Fred Johnson, 'Papy' Seale, field trips, weather (cold, then hot), team training, fellowship, and lasting comradery.

... I knew all the instructors and students by their first name.

My goal was a forestry career, but interrupted after graduation ('65) by the military draft....made a choice, joined the USAF, remained until retirement. Followed that with another "career" as a environmental science naturalist with The Outdoor School. Oh yes, a 50+ year member of the SAF. All set in motion with summer camp."

- Vance Matzke (Summer Camp 1963)
