    Launch your environmental science career at University of Idaho

    Explore environmental science and build the expertise to protect and sustain our planet through University of Idaho’s environmental science programs.

    As an environmental science (ENVS) student, you’ll examine urgent local and global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, water and energy sustainability, land-use conflicts and natural resource management. You’ll work closely with faculty mentors, collaborate with community and regional partners, and gain hands-on experience in Idaho’s vast natural landscapes — your living laboratory.

    Whether you’re starting your undergraduate degree, pursuing a flexible online master’s program or advancing doctoral research, you’ll graduate ready to lead innovative solutions in conservation, sustainability and natural resource management. 

    Explore our environmental science degrees

    At University of Idaho, environmental science is a university-wide, interdisciplinary program that connects faculty and coursework across multiple colleges. You’ll examine environmental issues through the lenses of science, policy and society — preparing you to become a knowledgeable leader and advocate for sustainable solutions. 
     

    Undergraduate degrees 

    As an undergraduate, you’ll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for careers in conservation, environmental policy, education and scientific research.  

    Choose from one of four emphasis areas, including:  

    • B.S. in environmental science, integrated sciences option
    • B.S. in environmental science, ecological restoration option
    • B.S. in environmental science, culture and communication option
    • B.S. in environmental science, policy, planning and management option

    Graduate degrees

    As a graduate student in environmental science, you’ll deepen your expertise in the biological, physical or social sciences while building a broad understanding of how environmental systems intersect with human values, economics and policy. 

    • M.S. in environmental science 
      Pursue one of two pathways designed to support your career goals:
      • Thesis option (on-campus): Conduct hands-on research and prepare for academic or research-focused careers.
      • Non-thesis option (online or on-campus): Advance your expertise through a flexible format designed for working professionals. 

    The fully online environmental science master’s program is ranked among OnlineU’s 2025 Best Online Master’s Degrees in Environmental Science. 

    • Ph.D. in environmental science 
      Engage in interdisciplinary research that addresses complex environmental challenges through fieldwork, laboratory research and close collaboration with faculty mentors.
