College of Agricultural and Life Sciences

Faculty members from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences received 51 grants from the Idaho Potato Commission for a total of $689,137. Highlights include: 

Yi Wang, $43,720 for “Storage Requirements for New and Potential Release Varieties for the Potato Industry”; Alexander Karasev and Mohamad Chikh Ali, $40,000 for “Development of Detection Methodology for Tuber Necrotic Strains of PVY”; Kasia Kinzer, $35,000 for “Seed Potato Quality Improvement”; and Louise-Marie Dandurand, $25,265 for “Eradication Strategies for Globodera pallida:  Use of Trap Crops.” Learn more about UI potato research.

Mariana Dobre and Erin S. Brooks received $361,115 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture for “Phosphorus Management in Forested Ecosystems.”

Kurtis Schroeder, Jack Brown and James Davis received $6,532 from the Idaho Oilseed Commission for “Determine the sensitivity of spring canola to low soil pH and aluminum toxicity.”

Joseph Dalton and Mireille Chahine received $94,301 from the University of Missouri for “Improving Dairy Cattle Fertility through Translational Genomics.”

Shannon Williams, Scott Jensen and Mireille Chahine receved $14,005 from the Idaho Beef Council for “Idaho Beef Quality Assurance Program.”     

Matthew Morra and multiple researchers from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences received $147,150 from Boise State University for UI/BSU 10007 Farm Bill Project: Crisis in Specialty Crops.”

Matthew Doumit and Ronald Richard received $7,700 from the Idaho Beef Council for “Development of Meat Animal Evaluators to Serve Idaho.”        

Matthew Doumit received from the Idaho Beef Council $24,950 for “Role of calpain-1 and -2 in tenderization of beef strip loin and top round during extended aging” and $29,650 for “Relationship Between Heifer Carcass Maturity and Beef Flavor.”

Mireille Chahine received three grants for a total of $11,918 from the Idaho Dairymen’s Association Inc. for “IDA Dairy Extension.”        

Gordon Murdoch received $33,863 from the Idaho Beef Council for “Year two: Improving color, color stability and flavor of the top sirloin through dietary rumen protected histidine supplementation.”

Ling-Ling Tsao received $2,000 from the Association of University Centers of Disabilities for “ACT Early Ambassador Application.”

Olga Walsh received $139,044 from Utah State University for “Optimizing Water and Nitrogen Use for Sustainable Wheat Production.”

Daniel Strawn received $66,421 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture for “Phosphorus Management in Forested Ecosystems.”

Kurtis Schroeder received $7,324 from Washington State University for “Developing agronomic strategies to optimize production of quinoa and hulless barley on no-till farms in Palouse region of Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington.”

Brennan Smith received $15,000 from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for “Developing Alternative Product Forms for Pollock Roe.”

Jae Ryu received $75,000 from the Idaho State Board of Education for “Drought mapping using a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) for precision agriculture in Idaho.”

College of Art and Architecture

Roger Rowley received $5,214 from the Idaho Commission on the Arts for “ICA Arts Education Project Grant FY17.”                               

College of Business and Economics

Scott Metlen received $500 from Gritman Medical Center for “Gritman ER expansion.”

Scott Metlen received $2,000 from the Boeing Company for “Boeing 787 Body Join.”

College of Education

Julie Fodor, Cari Murphy and Janice Carson received $1,173,739 from the Idaho State Department of Education for “FY17 CDHD SESTA.”

James Gregson received $143,773 from the Idaho State Department of Education for “School Improvement/ Idaho Building Capacity.”                         

Janice Carson received $84,881 from the Federal Communications Commission for “Idaho Deaf Blind Communication Equipment Distribution Program FY17.”

Cari Murphy received two grants totaling $97,343 from the Idaho State Department of Education for “SPDG Evaluation” and “RTI Idaho Training Clearinghouse.”

Julie Fodor received $5.01 million from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare for “FY17  Childcare Resource/Referral.”                                                       

Janice carson received $423,587 from the Department of Health and Human Services for “Idaho Assistive Technology Project 2016-2017.”                        

College of Engineering

College of Engineering Dean Larry Stauffer and multiple researchers in the college received a $700,000 grant from the Idaho State Board of Education’s IGEM Program for “Security Management of Cyber Physical Control Systems.” Read more about this project.

Matthew Bernards received $7,501 from Argonne National Laboratory for “Nuclear Safeguards Curriculum Development for Sub-Saharan Africa.”

Brian K. Johnson received $24,865 from Battelle Energy Alliance LLC for “Support Resilience Metrics Development for Distribution Systems.”

Joseph Law received $199,895 from NASA for “University of Idaho Proposal to NASA USIP Opportunity.”

Ralph Budwig received $12,000 from the National Science Foundation for “Supplement to UI NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program award.”                      

Colleges of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences

Steven Meier and Richard Reardon received $398,400 from the Legislative Services Office for “Millennium Fund:  Prevention / Cessation / Treatment.”

Leonard Garrison received $3,585 from the Idaho Commission on the Arts for “ACMS - ICA Entry Track Grant.”

Matthew Wappett received $20,400 from the Confucius Institute Headquarters of China for “Confucius Institute:  Year 3.”

College of Natural Resources

Terry Shaw and Mark Kimsey received two grants totaling $18,800 from Hancock Forest Management LLC.

Frank Wilhelm and Christine Moffitt received $7,582 from the Idaho Department of Agriculture for “Survey of Asian clam distribution at Hope in Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho.”                  

Michael Quist received $53,425 from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department for “Population structure, movement dynamics, and population dynamics of Burbot in the upper Green River system.”

Janet Rachlow Witham received $29,865 from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for “Evaluation of moose habitat in Idaho.”

Dennis Scarnecchia received $32,086 from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation for “Oklahoma Paddlefish Investigations.”

Brian Kennedy received $137,519 from the Bonneville Power Administration for “Integrating evolving life history strategies and life cycle modeling for fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha).”

Marc Rust received two grants for a total of $136,122 from the Western Forestry and Conservation Association for “IETIC 2016-2017 Award.”                                           

College of Science

Jeffrey Landman received $35,713 from the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee for PBAC Tracing Recharge.”

Jean’ne Shreeve received $45,000 from Nalas Engineering Services Inc. for “High Performance Energetics.”                           

Interdisciplinary

Lisette Waits and colleges in the College of Natural Resources and College of Science received $25,584 from the U.S. Geological Survey for “Examining the Taxonomy and Genetic Distinctiveness of the Red Wolf.”

Ronald Hardy of the Aquaculture Research Institute received $152,945 from the Soy Aquaculture Alliance for “Selection for high EPA and DHA in trout fed plant oil diets.”

Madison Powell of the Aquaculture Research Institute received $78,172 from the Soy Aquaculture Alliance for “Modified dietary amino acid balance to increase soy protein inclusion in trout feeds and validation of calprotectin as a biomarker of SBM induced intestinal injury.”                   

Jeff Seegmiller of the WWAMI Medical Education Program received $1,000 from Jannus Inc. for “Area Health Education Center for RUOP.”
