Exploring the Geology of the Ancient World

Elizabeth Cassel and Brian Yanites, both assistant professors in the UI College of Science’s Department of Geology, received $139,757 from the National Science Foundation for “Quantifying Paleotopography and Paleoclimate to Test Geodynamic Models in the Peruvian Andes.” Read about Cassel’s past research into an ancient mountain range, and read about Yanites’ past research into copper deposits.

Understanding an Important Fish
Dennis Scarnecchia, a professor of in the College of Natural Resources’ Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences, received $40,000 from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department for “North Dakota paddlefish investigations.” A news article about Scarnecchia’s work and the importance of paddlefish to the local economy appeared in the Glendive, Montana, Ranger-Review.

Craig McGowan, College of Science, $500,000 from the National Science Foundation for “CAREER: Establishing links between musculoskeletal morphology and the biomechanics of bipedal hopping in desert environments.”

Deborah Stenkamp and Peter Fuerst, Science, $206,625 from the Department of Health and Human Services for “Synapses in Regenerated Retina.”

James Nagler, Science, $77,295 from the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission for “Effect of parent age on rate of minijack production among male progeny of spring Chinook.”

David McIlroy, Science, $20,000 from the Department of Naval Research for “Next Generation Nanospring Based Explosives Sensors.”

Arjan Meddens and Crystal Kolden, Science, $5,683 from California Polytechnic State for “Establishing ecosystem resilience and resistance metrics following fires in chaparral shrublands and ponderosa pine forests.”

Sonya Meyer and Kristin Hansen, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, six awards totaling $73,623 from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture for “Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program.”
