Gilbert Kamgan Nkuekam was born and grew-up in Douala, Cameroon where he received his secondary education at College INTEG (Institut des Techniques Economiques et de Gestion). He matriculated in 1993 and received his BSc degree (with distinction) in natural sciences, with plant biology as major, from the University of Douala in 1996, a B.Sc. Honours in microbiology from the University of Pretoria in 2003 and MSc. in plant pathology (with distinction) from the same institute in 2007. He enrolled for a doctorate in plant pathology, with a focus in forest pathology in 2007 at the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI), University of Pretoria, South Africa.
