Agricultural research
The Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station (IAES) is the CALS research division and is responsible for statewide programming in agricultural research. IAES operates 10 research and Extension centers in Idaho, focusing on agricultural practices, developing new crop varieties, protecting animals and crops from pests and diseases, and helping grow Idaho’s economy.
Research focus
- Innovative Agriculture and Marketing Partnership — The largest grant in University of Idaho history supports farmers in adapting to changing climates through innovation and collaboration.
- Northwest leader in potato research — U of I is the premier resource for potato research and education in the region, advancing production and sustainability.
- Soil health — CALS researchers are making significant contributions to improve soil health for Idaho’s agriculture industry, protect its unique ecosystems and contribute to sustainable solutions for the future.
- Cereals research program — Supports growers by addressing key challenges in wheat and barley production.
- Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE) — Home to the nation’s largest research dairy, CAFE focuses on water use, environmental quality, and supporting Idaho’s dairy, livestock, cropland and food processing industries.
- Idaho Water Resources Research Institute — Conducts critical research to support water resource management in Idaho, the Northwest and nationwide.
- Brassica breeding program — Develops high-performing cultivars of oilseed and condiment mustard to improve agricultural outcomes.
- Beef cattle research and Extension — Addresses the evolving needs of Idaho’s beef industry with targeted research and outreach to support producers.
- Nutrition and women’s health Center of Biomedical Research Excellence program — Investigates the full spectrum of nutrition and women’s health across the lifespan to inform better health outcomes.

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences houses several collections used for teaching and research efforts.
Entomology museum
The William F. Barr Entomological Museum houses over one million mounted insect specimens.
Stillinger Herbarium
The Stillinger Herbarium is the largest herbarium in Idaho and functions as the official state repository for more than 200,000 plant and fungal specimens.
Soil monolith collection
The Maynard A. Fosberg Soil Monolith Collection contains approximately 235 soils from Idaho, the Pacific Northwest and the United States, one of the most unique teaching resources at U of I.
Historic costume collection
The Leila Old Historic Costume Collection reflects the clothing across lower-, middle- and upper-class society in Idaho from 1850 to the present.
