The Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra (formerly known as the Moscow Youth Orchestra) was founded in August 2001 by Sheila Kilcoyne and area string teachers with the support of the Lionel Hampton School of Music. In August 2004, the orchestra became a part of the University of Idaho Orchestra program. the Greater Palouse Youth Orchestra has been a part of the Preparatory Division since 2012.
The GPYO includes students grades 9-12 who commit extra time to the study of their instrument. The objective of the GPYO is to enhance the music curriculum currently offered in local public schools, and to provide a university-level youth orchestra program to area musicians.

The GPYO presents two full concerts each year (in December and May), plus one or two performances with other orchestras. Membership is by audition only.
