Institutes that inspire innovation and connection

Our institutes drive interdisciplinary research and global engagement, empowering students and faculty to tackle complex challenges and create lasting impact through research, education and outreach.

Martin Institute

Through collaborative learning and hands-on opportunities, the Martin Institute prepares students for impactful careers in international affairs, diplomacy and global problem-solving — advancing peace and security with innovative solutions.

Habib Institute for Asian Studies

Through research, academic programs and a diverse range of events, the Habib Institute promotes a deeper understanding of Asian cultures and societies. Fostering connections on and off campus, students, faculty and the greater Idaho community are equipped to thrive in an interconnected world.

Labs that lead exploration and discovery

From exploring the past to addressing environmental and societal issues, our labs are spaces where curiosity drives action. Students research alongside faculty mentors, gaining skills and insights that prepare them to navigate complex questions and make meaningful contributions.

Alfred W. Bowers Laboratory of Anthropology

Rooted in hands-on discovery, students explore archaeology and anthropology, from artifact analysis and conservation to community outreach. Collaborative projects with faculty uncover the past and shape the future.

Confluence Lab

The Confluence Lab builds bridges between the arts, humanities and sciences, collaborating across disciplines and with rural communities to address environmental issues like wildfire, wilderness management and climate change. Projects take innovative, creative approaches to ecological problems and to the communication of scientific data.

Nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise, our faculty lead projects spanning creative and professional writing, theatrical and musical performance to archival, field and laboratory research. Community outreach

Through a variety of initiatives, we connect with diverse populations to address societal challenges and promote education, inclusivity and growth. Our community outreach creates opportunities to engage in projects that drive positive change.

Prison Education Initiative

The Prison Education Initiative (PEI) extends educational opportunities to incarcerated individuals, promoting rehabilitation and personal growth through access to higher education.

CIRCLES: Cultivating Indigenous Research Communities for Leadership in Education and STEM

CIRCLES fosters Indigenous-led research and education by integrating Indigenous knowledge systems into STEM fields. Through partnerships with tribal communities, the program supports graduate education, faculty development and community-based research initiatives.

Human Community Research Consortium

The Human Community Research Consortium (HCRC) is a group committed to fostering a scholarly network focused on topics related to human communities. Established through the 2010 CLASS Humanities Fellows program, HCRC connects scholars across CLASS and U of I, facilitating collaboration and supporting independent research that drives impact.

Idaho Society of Fellows, Post-doc opportunities at University of Idaho

The Idaho Society of Fellows brings leading postdoctoral researchers to CLASS, enriching our academic community and expanding opportunities for student mentorship and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Fellows teach general education courses, engage in research and support students through workshops, lectures and one-on-one guidance.

Through partnerships with CLASS faculty, these scholars contribute to a dynamic learning environment while pursuing their own research in fields such as political science, history, anthropology and international studies.
