University of Idaho’s thesis-based Master of Science in civil engineering prepares you for advanced research and professional practice in geotechnical and geological engineering.
This unique program integrates civil engineering, engineering geology, hydrogeology, site characterization, soil mechanics, rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering to develop expertise in designing safe, resilient infrastructure.
You’ll conduct original graduate research under faculty supervision while evaluating geologic hazards, analyzing subsurface conditions and developing engineering solutions for foundations, transportation systems, water resources and other civil infrastructure.
The thesis-based program gives you flexibility to shape your graduate education around your research interests and professional goals. Working with your advisory committee, you’ll build on your undergraduate foundation through advanced coursework while developing the ability to conduct research, analyze and interpret results, and communicate technical findings effectively. This combination of specialized study and independent research prepares you to evaluate complex civil engineering problems using evidence, engineering judgment and advanced analytical methods.
Your graduate education can also connect geotechnical engineering with other areas of civil engineering. U of I offers graduate expertise in environmental engineering, hydraulics and water resources engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and highway and pavement materials, providing a broader perspective on the infrastructure and environmental systems affected by subsurface conditions.
You’ll graduate prepared to pursue advanced civil and geotechnical engineering work in consulting, industry and government, continue into doctoral study, or contribute to research addressing infrastructure and environmental challenges. Curriculum
The M.S. in civil engineering is a 30-credit program emphasizing research, technical specialization and developing new knowledge through advanced coursework and a thesis requirement, making it well suited for students pursuing research careers, technical leadership or doctoral study.
A non-thesis Master’s of Engineering (M.Engr.) is available for students preparing for industry roles and focuses on engineering practice, design and professional application through advanced coursework and project-based experiences. Current undergraduate students can earn an M.Engr. degree in one additional year and pay in-state tuition rates by applying before completing their undergraduate study.

Learning outcomes
The Master of Science in civil engineering develops advanced skills in research, technical analysis, problem-solving and innovative design through graduate coursework and thesis research. You will gain expertise in specialized areas of civil engineering while applying analytical methods to address complex infrastructure challenges. Graduates are prepared for high-demand careers in engineering consulting, research and development, government agencies and industry, with opportunities in fields such as resilient infrastructure, transportation, water resources, environmental engineering and geotechnical engineering.
Program format
- A thesis is required for the M.S. civil engineering degree. A Master of Engineering in civil engineering is also offered as a non-thesis option.
- Depending on your interests, your faculty adviser will help you develop a focused plan of study.
- A minimum of 30 credit hours is required to complete this degree, but up to six hours of thesis research credit may apply.
- Degree candidates are also required to conduct research and publicly defend a thesis.

Professional licensing
Completion of the program will count towards eligibility for the Professional Engineer's License (PE) to practice Engineering, which requires a four-year degree from an ABET-accredited school, four years of experience under a PE, and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles of Practice in Engineering (PE) Exams.

Applicants for the M.S. in civil engineering must meet the following degree-specific admission requirements:

- GPA: 3.0 (Applicants with a lower undergraduate GPA who have relevant professional experience in the field, have already earned a graduate degree, or have completed graduate-level credits may still be considered for admission with approval from the academic program.)

- Other requirements: Applicants not holding a B.S. degree in civil engineering are required to show evidence of completing the following undergraduate coursework:
- Mathematics through differential equations
- One semester of chemistry
- One semester of calculus-based physics
- One semester of engineering statics
- Once admitted, additional preparatory coursework will be determined by the student’s advisory committee and/or as prerequisites to courses listed in the student's study plan.

Application and admission process:
Applications are submitted online and are specific to the program and term selected. Applicants seeking admission to multiple programs must submit a separate application for each program.
Before submitting an application, applicants must provide personal and academic information from all post-secondary institutions attended, recommender information, required program-specific materials, and their intended program and start term.
Applicants seeking a thesis concentration are encouraged to identify and contact a potential faculty advisor or major professor during the application process. Early identification of an advisor can help ensure that a faculty member in the applicant’s area of interest has capacity to supervise the student and appropriate research opportunities are available. Applicants should consult the College of Engineering website to identify faculty whose research aligns with their academic and research interests.
Applications are reviewed for admission by the academic program. Only complete applications, including required letters of recommendation and payment of the application fee, will be forwarded for evaluation and admission decision. Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete their applications early to allow sufficient time for a thorough review.
International students seeking F-1 or J-1 visas must provide financial documentation demonstrating their ability to cover the cost of attendance. This documentation is required only after admission.
