First Bite New Play Series
Be the first to experience new scripts, written by MFA playwrights from the Theatre Arts Department, through the First Bite New Play Series. This virtual series produces two plays per semester.
"The Mire" by Trace Davis: March 28-29, 2026
In "The Mire," Davis's sharply observed contemporary play, a married couple – Reese and Gabriella – find their fragile equilibrium upended by the persistent presence of Reese's needy ex-wife. As loyalties are strained and emotional leverage becomes a weapon, Reese is forced into an impossible position: choosing between past obligations and present loyalty, where every option carries its own cost. "The Mire" examines the modern marital contract with unsentimental clarity, exposing how love, guilt and responsibility can entangle even the best intentions.
Performances for "The Mire" by Trace Davis will be at 5 p.m. PST on Saturday, March 28, and at 2 p.m. PST on Sunday, March 29, via Zoom.
"Head of the Family" by Laura Byron Wade: April 4-5, 2026
This comedic family debacle in two acts focuses on two adult siblings, Max and Minnie, as they face the challenge of digging through their recently deceased father's belongings. Minnie, who is an alcoholic and a playwright, approaches the process very differently than her brother, Max, who is a recovering alcoholic and a professor. The plot twists when they find something illegal in the house, are visited by a nosey neighbor, Miss Nancy, and mistake Max's boyfriend, Joel, for a police officer who has arrived at the house to arrest them. Filled with mistaken identity, family secrets, horny neighbors, bottles of Jack Daniels and the love of the greatest works of Walt Whitman, "Head of the Family" will take the audience on a ride fueled by humor, mystery and suspense.
Performances for Head of the Family by Laura Wade will be at 5 p.m. PST on Saturday, April 4, and at 2 p.m. PST on Sunday, April 5, via Zoom.
