First-year live on campus requirement

University of Idaho requires all full-time, first-year students under the age of 21 to live in university-recognized housing; including residence halls or fraternities/sororities for their first academic year. This policy is based on research showing that students who live on campus thrive in a supportive, integrated living and learning environment.

Students who meet certain criteria may request an exemption from this requirement. Learn more about the first-year live on requirement and exemptions.

Residence hall meal plan requirements

First-year students living in any University of Idaho residence hall, and all students living in Wallace, Theophilus Tower, North Campus Communities or McConnell, are required to have a meal plan.

Meal plan information can be found on the Idaho Eats website.

Life in the residence halls

College is an exciting journey, filled with new experiences and opportunities. It’s a time to discover new interests, build lasting connections and lay the foundation for a fulfilling future.

You’ll find support every step of the way through residence hall academic resources, wellness programs, social events and leadership opportunities.

Each residence hall has its own Housing Area Teams (HATs), providing residents with numerous opportunities to engage and take on leadership roles. By participating in RHA, you can actively contribute to building an engaging and supportive campus community.

Student employment opportunities

Starting in November, you can apply to be a Resident Assistant (RA), Program Coordinator (PC) or Academic Peer Mentor (APM) for the following academic year. To apply, use the student employment tab in the Housing Portal.

You can also find employment in various departments including dining, the university bookstore (VandalStore), custodial services, summer conferences, parking and even the university golf course.

At University of Idaho Housing and Residence Life, your well-being is our priority. Our dedicated facilities team works tirelessly, with custodial staff regularly cleaning all public spaces, including community restrooms and lounges. We do this because we genuinely care about your safety, health and comfort, ensuring a pleasant living experience. Should you ever have a maintenance concern in your room, simply submit a service request, and we'll take care of it promptly.

To submit a service request, please visit the housing portal.

Housing accommodations

A disability may require you to find housing accommodations which ensure full and integrated access to on-campus living. These accommodations, which are determined based on individual needs and functional limitations, may include ADA-compliant rooms, single occupancy rooms, shared or private bathrooms and room modifications. Housing and Residence Life collaborates closely with the Center for Disability Access and Resources (CDAR) to create a supportive and accessible living environment.

If you need housing accommodations, we encourage you to connect with CDAR to explore your options and begin the accommodation request process.

Roommate selection process

Finding a roommate

When filling out the housing application, you’ll be able to complete a personal profile. You’ll answer questions about study habits, social preferences and sleep patterns. During room selection, you can view other applicants profiles and compare answers to help find a compatible roommate.

Creating a roommate group

During the first phase of the housing application, you can browse profiles of other applicants and connect with potential roommates. Depending on the residence hall, you can form roommate groups of 2–5 people, making the room selection process smoother.

Choosing the same room

If you have not created a roommate group during phase one, you can still choose to live with another student by selecting the same available space when room selection opens. There is no requirement to form a roommate group beforehand—you simply need to coordinate and select the same room or suite as your friend.

Specialized communities

If you’re applying to live in a specialized community, you’ll be assigned roommates to ensure compatibility with the community’s focus and values. These interest-based housing options place you with others who share similar academic goals, interests or lifestyles, fostering a supportive living environment.
