Freshman/first-year student housing
What is the live-on campus requirement?
University of Idaho requires all full-time, first year students under 21 years of age to live in organized living groups that are officially recognized by the university for one academic year. You can meet this requirement by living in either the residence halls or by living in-house with Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Will there be a space for me in the residence halls?
We have housing available to every first-year student who would like to live on campus. For the most recent updated housing availability, log in to the housing portal to view available rooms.
When I try to sign up for a room, I am unable to see any available. What should I do?
If you are unable to see any available rooms in the housing portal, try the following options:
- If you selected a specialized community on the "Choose your community" tab, the spaces may have filled. Navigate back to the "Choose your community" page and select "academic traditional" at the bottom of the page. Then click "save and continue" until you reach the room selection page.
- If you are in a roommate group, there may no longer be spaces available to accommodate the entire group. If you leave the group, you will see additional room options on the room selection page.
Housing waitlist
I am a first-year freshman. Will I be on the waitlist?
We prioritize housing for all incoming first-year students. If you have completed the housing application and paid the required fees, you are guaranteed a space in on-campus housing.
We do have a housing waitlist for non-first-year students due to the high demand.
Non-first year students are students currently attending U of I and returning for a new semester and those transferring to U of I from another institution.
Why do you have a waitlist?
The number of non-first year students requesting on-campus housing exceeds the available spaces for non-first-year students. We created a waitlist to manage the remaining applications and offer students a chance to secure a spot if cancellations occur.
What does being on the waitlist mean for me?
Being on the waitlist means you are in line to receive a housing assignment if space becomes available. We also encourage you to explore off-campus living options. We will contact you if a space opens through your Vandal email address. Checking your Vandal email regularly is very important. Not doing so could result in missing an opportunity to live on campus.
When will I know if I have been assigned a room or if I should look for housing somewhere else?
You will receive an update on the waitlist status every week through your Vandal email account. We strongly recommend exploring off-campus options in the meantime, as on-campus availability is uncertain. We don't want you to be without housing.
What do I do if I am offered an off-campus housing opportunity, and I am still on the housing waitlist?
Log into the housing portal and cancel your housing application. This will remove you from the waitlist.
You have until July 1 to cancel your housing application without any financial penalties.
What do I do if I am offered an on-campus room after signing a lease for an off-campus apartment
We would encourage you to decline your on-campus assignment. Many times, there are large fees associated with breaking a lease for an off-campus housing option. It would be in your best interest not to break your off-campus lease agreement.
What support services are available for students who are struggling to find housing?
Housing and Residence Life puts on “Renting 101” events each semester, which provides you with the tools to be successful when renting an off-campus apartment.
The university also maintains a list of local Moscow property managers and apartment complexes to support you in your housing search.
Can I request to be added to the waitlist for a specific building?
We do not currently offer building-specific waitlists. Assignments are made based on availability.
Can I request to be placed with my friend if we are both on the waitlist?
If spaces become available, we will do our best to accommodate roommate requests for students on the waitlist. However, we cannot guarantee roommate placements due to the limited availability.
I am “--” number on the list. What are my chances of getting a room?
It's difficult to predict your exact chances as waitlist movement depends on cancellations and other factors. We will be moving through the waitlist as quickly as possible. You can view where you are on the waitlist through the housing portal.
We also encourage you to explore off-campus housing options.
What is the university doing to address the housing shortage in the long term?
To address the housing shortage in the long term, the university is undertaking the following strategic actions:
- Renovation of existing facilities: Starting summer 2025, the university will begin renovating the Tower and Wallace to enhance their capacity and quality. These renovations are designed to make older dorms more comfortable and appealing, extending their usability and capacity and ensuring they meet the needs of today’s students.
- Exploration of constructing new residence halls: The university is actively exploring the financial aspects and logistical requirements for constructing new residence halls. This effort aims to significantly increase the number of available on-campus housing units, accommodating the growing student population and relieving pressure on existing facilities.
Additionally, in planning these new constructions and renovations, the university is mindful of the need to adapt to natural fluctuations in enrollment over the lifespan of each building. This involves creating flexible housing solutions that can adjust to varying student numbers, ensuring that facilities remain effective and well-utilized throughout their operational life.
By implementing these strategies, the university aims to create a more sustainable and student-friendly housing system that can effectively support both current and future student populations.

Residence hall rooms and amenities
Can I request a change of room?

If this is an emergency, please contact the Housing and Residence Life office at 208-885-6571.
What if there is damage in my room when I move-in?
Our team puts in a great deal of effort to make sure your room is clean and in good condition. Rooms may have some normal wear from usage over time. Defects such as small paint chips, scratches in wood/painted furniture or pinholes in cork board are considered “normal wear.” Each student is responsible for inspecting their space at move-in and reporting its condition. You can learn more about your responsibilities as a residence hall tenant by reviewing our Responsibility for Room Condition Information document.
When inspecting the room, you should look for issues such as: wall damage (holes, large paint chips, etc.), flooring damage (large stains or tears), mattress damage (inspect seams for tears/holes) and broken furniture.
As with any rental, we encourage you to take pictures/video of the space at move-in and keep them for your records.

What if my roommate and I don’t get along?
We want you to be happy and comfortable living on campus. Talking with your RA is the first step to take if you and your roommate are having a hard time adjusting to living together. If you still feel you must change rooms, please visit the housing office, and we will help you apply for a room change.
There are no room changes during dead week and finals week.
