Knowing how to navigate course registration at University of Idaho is essential for maintaining your academic progress.

If a class is full, you can join a waitlist through the registration portal. When a seat becomes available, you'll receive a VandalMail notification and must register within 24 hours.

If you chose to withdrawal from a course, you should consult your advisor to make an informed decision. Withdrawing from a class can impact your financial aid, degree progress and GPA. Full-semester withdrawals require additional steps.

Learn more about waitlists, course withdrawals and semester withdrawal policies to stay on track toward graduation.

Wait list processes

Departments may choose to enable wait lists for their classes. When these classes reach maximum enrollment and additional students attempt to register, a wait list is created.

Joining a wait list for a full class

If you receive a FULL - SELECT WAIT LIST & SUBMIT error when registering, reserve your spot in line by selecting Wait List from the drop-down in the Action column. Click Submit to complete the request. Students are not automatically put onto a wait list.

Be aware that all course prerequisites must be met to be accepted onto a wait list. Being on a wait list is not the same as being registered — wait list credits do not count toward enrollment.

You can choose to register for a wait list for multiple sections of the same class/ However, you can only be registered in one section of a class at a time. When a seat opens, other classes can be added or dropped to achieve your desired schedule.

When space opens

If you are on a wait list, diligently check VandalMail. This will be your only notification of registration availability when a seat opens in waitlisted classes.

  • After receiving the VandalMail notification, you must register within 24 hours. Wait list registration does not extend beyond web registration deadlines, even if the 24-hour window ends later. Remember: all financial and registration holds must be resolved before adding a waitlisted class is allowed.
  • Log into Student Registration and choose Register for Classes. Select the desired term from the drop-down menu and click Continue. In the lower-right Summary panel, use the Action drop-down next to Status to change the class to **Web Registered**. Use the same column to drop any classes that create time conflicts. Check the Conditional Add and Drop box to prevent dropping existing classes if the selected classes are no longer available to add. Click Submit.
  • If no action is taken, within the 24-hour window, the class is dropped and notification goes to the next student on the list.
  • After being dropped from the wait list, you must re-add (and select the Wait List option) if you still want to register for the class.
  • To remove yourself from a wait list, select Drop from the Action drop-down.
Departmental registration override

If an instructor or academic department grants you an override to register while you are on a wait list, you must first drop from the wait list. Navigate to Register for Classes, select the desired term, and click Continue.

  • In the lower-right Summary section, select Drop from the Action drop-down and click Submit twice; once to drop the class and once to remove it from the Summary.
  • Add the class once more by entering the CRN or using Class Search.
  • Your registration is confirmed when Registered appears next to the class.
Registration deadlines

Wait lists are available until the session's registration deadline and are automatically dropped afterwards. Fall, Spring and Summer semesters each have multiple sessions. All registration actions must be completed by these deadlines. Registration deadlines supersede wait list notifications, including those sent on the final day of registration.

Class withdrawal

Before you withdraw from a course, consider the consequences. There will be impacts to your financial aid, satisfactory academic progress and your cumulative GPA. You may consider academic assistance like academic coaching or tutoring to help you complete the course. Discuss your options with your academic advisor before you make your decision.

What are the consequences of withdrawing?

If a student opts to withdraw from a class it can impact their ability to enroll in subsequent classes and graduate on schedule, as well as affect financial aid.

  • If the class is a prerequisite to successive classes or to the student’s major, withdrawing can prevent the student from registering for the next series of classes or from progressing in their major.
  • Some classes are only offered specific semesters or years; withdrawing can delay progress toward graduation if the class is required and not offered again for some time.
  • Withdrawing from classes, leaving a student enrolled below full-time status, can have a negative effect on financial aid and satisfactory progress requirements. Students should contact their financial aid advisor before opting to withdraw.
  • Tuition and fees remain charged for withdrawn classes; if the total number of enrolled credits over a semester exceeds 20 overload fees may be charged. Contact Student Accounts for further information regarding fees.
  • While grades of W are not punitive to a student's GPA, a pattern of withdrawals each semester may be viewed negatively by future employers, graduate schools or professional programs.
  • Students may not withdraw from a class after a final grade has been assigned, even if this occurs before the deadline to withdraw.

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor before withdrawing from any class to discuss the consequences on their progress toward degree. Degree audits give students a tool to view degree requirements and should be consulted when meeting with their academic advisor. Degree audits are updated 24 hours after withdrawing to reflect the current progress toward degree.

What does a grade of W mean?

A grade of W designates withdrawal from an individual class and does not affect GPA. Withdrawals do not count as failing grades. Grades of W are recorded on a student's transcript for class withdrawals after the tenth day of the semester. A grade of W is simply recording that the student started a class and did not complete it.

Is there a limit to the number of Ws I can have on my transcript?

Undergraduate and non-degree seeking students are limited to 21 credits of withdrawal over their entire career. Graduate, law and medical students are not limited in their withdrawals. Students are cautioned that withdrawing from classes repeatedly can delay completion of degree requirements.

Will my transcript look bad with Ws?

A transcript is a record of the student's academic work each semester and a W grade does not have an effect on the GPA. Applications to graduate or professional programs, such as law or medical schools, will review a student's transcript for admission but since W grades are not punitive, they are not converted to a failing grade.

Semester withdrawal

If a full withdrawal from University of Idaho is necessary, you must cancel your classes before the semester starts to avoid tuition charges and transcript records. If the semester has begun, consult with academic advisors, financial aid and housing to understand the impact, then use MyUI to withdraw. Refund eligibility depends on withdrawal timing. Hardship withdrawals and military leave options are available. If a hardship withdrawal is needed, contact the Dean of Students for guidance on your next steps.

Prior to semester

Students who are unable to participate in classes for a semester or have decided not to attend University of Idaho must cancel their classes before the first day of the semester to avoid tuition, fees, and a transcript showing withdrawn classes. Students can drop classes through MyUI, contact the Office of the Registrar or request cancellation online. If this is the student's first semester at University of Idaho, their admission will be cancelled. Students should remember to contact Housing and Residence Life to cancel housing contracts if they planned on living in university housing as well.

After the semester begins

Students who are unable to complete classes after the semester begins may drop/withdraw from their classes through MyUI. Students are encouraged to speak to:

  • Dean of Students Office: Withdrawing from University of Idaho is a big step. If you would like to discuss this decision with someone, a member of the Dean of Students Office would be happy to visit with you about possible resources available to you on campus if you decide to stay at U of I or help you plan a path back to University of Idaho if you decide withdrawing is the best option at this time. Contact 208-885-6757 or askjoe@uidaho.edu.
  • Academic advisor to review degree progress and plans for completion.
  • Financial aid to review status and determine if repayment is required.
  • Student accounts: Students who withdraw in accordance with the regulations governing withdrawals are entitled to a refund of fees and tuition based on the university's refund policy. Refunds are calculated on total tuition and fees charged. Refunds are based on the official date of withdrawal, which is considered the date the student drops their last class on MyUI. Applicable federal Title IV financial aid funds will be returned to the Department of Education based on statutory regulations. U of I policies and protocols regarding scholarships and institutional aid will also apply.
  • University housing: Students either within the residence halls or apartment and family housing community who withdraw from University of Idaho must vacate their room or apartment within 72 hours of the date of withdrawal. Students will forfeit their housing deposit and depending on the date of withdraw may not qualify for any money back for the semester charges. Students must contact Housing and Residence Life immediately upon withdrawing from the university to complete the required check-out paperwork at 208-885-6571 or housing@uidaho.edu; or visit their office on the second floor of Wallace Residence Center.
  • Visit the Counseling and Mental Health Center if you need assistance with personal issues.

Students may wish to speak with these individuals and offices before making the decision to withdraw from the semester.

Students who withdraw from a semester are able to register for a subsequent semester as long as their financial obligations to the university are met.

Withdraw deadlines

Through 10th day of semester

Drop all classes on MyUI. No classes or grades transcripted. Tuition and fees are refunded at 100%; financial aid is recalculated based on date withdrawal completed. Students may re-register for classes on MyUI through the sixth day of the semester after contacting the Office of the Registrar to request re-enrollment.

11th day — end of second week following midterms

Withdraw all classes on MyUI. Classes and WU grades (withdrawn from university) transcripted. WU grades do not factor into GPA or affect academic standing, nor do they count toward 21-credit withdraw limit. No refund of tuition and fees; financial aid is recalculated based on date withdrawal completed.

After end of second week following midterm

Student must petition Academic Petitions Committee for late withdrawal through their academic deans office. Classes and WU grades (withdrawn from university) transcripted. WU grades do not factor into GPA or affect academic standing, nor do they count toward 21-credit withdraw limit.

Hardship withdrawal

Hardship withdrawals are processed through the Office of the Dean of Students.

Hardship withdrawal is available to students who are withdrawing from ALL coursework. If you wish to withdraw from selected classes, you must complete the action in MyUI prior to the deadline or contact your college dean's office to complete an academic petition if the deadline has passed.

Active military duty

Students who are called to active military duty should refer to the Guidelines for Military Leave and contact the Office of Veteran's Affairs for assistance with the withdrawal process and their transition from the university and their return upon completion of military leave.
