About student billing

Students receive billing statements by email in July for the fall semester and in January for the spring semester. Monthly billing emails are also sent for any unpaid balances.

Charges added during the semester are due in full within 10 days of the posting date. If your balance exceeds $500, you won’t be able to register, add or drop classes.

Official transcripts will not be released if you have an outstanding balance unless you’re receiving Title IV financial aid. If you're on a payment plan and your account is current, transcripts may still be available.

If you need transcripts at the end of the semester, make sure your balance is paid and request them before the next semester begins.

Note: University of Idaho does not drop courses for nonpayment. Students are responsible for dropping courses prior to the first day of the term to avoid being billed and graded.

Billing information by term

Fall and spring terms

All returning and new students will receive an email billing notification sent to their U of I email account only. Parents or others needing copies of the billing statement will need to get this information from the student. All tuition, fees, room and board and prior term balances are due in full by the first day of the term. A $100 late payment fee begins on the eleventh day of the term if your account is not paid in full or you have not signed up for a payment plan.

See the late fee schedule for additional possible late fees.

Failure to receive a bill does not relieve students from payment responsibilities.

Student registration is not canceled for non-payment.

Summer term

All returning and new students will receive an email billing notification sent to their U of I email account only. All payments are due prior to, or on, the first Monday day of the first session for which a student is enrolled.

Example: A student is registered for one class in the first session and one class in the last session of summer courses. Payment for both classes is due prior to or on the first Monday of the first session.

Winter intersession term

All returning and new students will receive an email billing notification sent to their U of I email account. All payments are due prior to, or on, the first day of class.

See the late fee schedule for additional dates and deadlines.

Tuition and Refund Policy

Students who withdraw in accordance with the regulations governing withdrawals are entitled to the refund of tuition and fees according to the schedule posted. Refunds are calculated on total fees and tuition charged. Refunds are based on the official date of withdrawal, which is considered to be the date the student begins the withdrawal process. Reduced fees paid by individuals using the employee / employee spouse / employee dependent educational benefit or senior citizen waiver benefit are not eligible for refunds. Special lab and course fees are only refundable following the same refund schedule for tuition and fees, unless otherwise specified by the department charging the fee. All requests for refund of fees must be formally initiated in the semester in which the fees (charges) were incurred. Applicable federal Title IV financial aid funds will be returned to the Department of Education based on statutory regulations. Please select the late fees page on the right to see those schedule dates in detail.

Financial Credit Policy for Hardship Withdrawals

In instances of hardship withdrawals, to encourage students to continue pursuing their education, the university issues financial credits based on the chart below, subject to the following terms:

  1. Financial credits are calculated based on the total tuition and fees charged.
  2. Financial credits are based on the effective date of the hardship withdrawal, as determined by the authorized university official or committee. However, the effective date for financial credit cannot be earlier than the date the student requests a hardship withdrawal. In instances where the effective date of a hardship withdrawal is before the date a student requests a hardship withdrawal, financial credits will be determined as of the date the student requests a hardship withdrawal.
  3. Financial credits may be used only by the student who was issued such credit. It is not transferable or assignable to others.
  4. Reduced fees arrangements, including, but not limited to, any reduced fees paid by individuals using the employee educational benefit, the employee spouse educational benefit, the employee dependent waiver benefit, the senior citizen waiver benefit, or any other institutional waivers are not eligible for financial credits.
  5. Special lab and course fees are non-refundable after the second week of the semester unless otherwise specified by the department charging the fee, and are also not eligible for financial credits.
  6. Applicable federal Title IV financial aid funds will be returned to the Department of Education based on statutory regulations. U of I policies and protocols regarding scholarships and institutional aid will also apply. Any financial credit received under this policy shall be automatically applied first to pay any debt owed by the student.
    1. When the results of the return of Title IV financial aid funds create an owing balance on the account, any financial credit will be automatically applied to the owing balance on the account. If there is still an owing balance after the financial credit is applied, the student will be billed, and the owing balance will be due within ten days of the billing date.
    2. When the results of the return of Title IV financial aid funds and scholarships create a credit balance on the account, the student will not be issued a refund, but rather a financial credit will be placed in a holding account to be used by the student to pay tuition and fees in future semesters. Once the student is registered and charged tuition and fees for a future semester, the student is responsible for requesting that Student Accounts apply the financial credit to pay tuition and fees posted on the student’s account.
  7. Any financial credit received under this policy will be valid for the following six semesters (with the summer counting as one semester). For example, if financial credit is received for the Spring 2023 semester, such financial credit must be used by the Spring 2025 semester.
    1. Students who are unable, for hardship reasons, to use the financial credit before it expires, may petition to request an extension of the expiration date using the appeal process described below.
  8. Students may appeal the refund of fees for Hardship Withdrawals. Appeals must be submitted to the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA) or designee using the process outlined below. Students must provide the following criteria to support their appeal with sufficient documentation:
    1. Student appeals under this policy are limited to:
      1. Mistakes by the university in applying this policy.
      2. Requests for extension of financial credit expiration date.
      3. Exceptional circumstances.
    2. To engage in the appeal process, send an email addressing the requirements above to financial-appeals@uidaho.edu.
  9. Any time before the financial credit expires, a student who received a financial credit under this policy may elect to receive 50% of amount of financial credit in the form of a refund. To do so, students must fill out the hardship withdrawal refund election form and provide it to Student Accounts before the financial credit expires. This election is final and cannot be reversed.
