Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is a certification program to help faculty, staff and students understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack — even with no clinical training — Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health related crisis.
Participants must pre-register and complete two hours of pre-work prior to the scheduled instructor led sessions. Pre-work does not carry over to rescheduled sessions. Additional details below.
MHFA Course Information
- The course is provided at no cost for U of I employees and students
- If you are unable to attend the course that you have registered, please contact amandaf@uidaho.edu to cancel your registration as spots are limited.
- Training with less than 15 participants registered are subject to cancellation.
- Courses are held throughout the year, and completion of the entire eight-hour course is necessary to gain certification. Participants needing to miss more than 30 minutes of the course will need to register for a different date.
- Certification lasts for three years from training date.
- Two-hour self-paced course to be completed before the instructor led course
- Six-hour live instructor lead course
- Overview of mental health concerns like depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders
- Risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems
- Impact of mental illness
- ALGEE action plan to get someone connected to help
