May is Mental Health Month!
Mental Health Month has been observed since 1949 and seeks to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and offer education and trainings in mental health topics. This year, Vandal Health Education is observing Mental Health Month virtually with opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to be trained to respond to mental health concerns and substance use.

Stress Management | May 6, 10:30 am
In these uncertain times, it can be difficult to manage stress. In this workshop, we will answer questions like: What is stress? Is all stress bad? We all encounter stress, so how we cope with stress is vital. Participants will learn all about stress and try out some stress management strategies to find what works for them!
QPR Suicide Prevention Training | May 12, 11:30 am & May 28, 1:30 pm
QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. It is an evidenced-based, 1-hour training program to help faculty, staff and students respond to someone in a mental health crisis and thinking about suicide. Participants will learn how to: Recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer hope, and get help and save a life.
How to Help a Friend | May 19 1:00 pm
Gain the skills and confidence to initiate a conversation with someone if you are concerned about their alcohol or other drug use or other risky behaviors. Learn why people can become defensive and how to use motivational interviewing principles to decrease resistance and have a productive conversation from a position of care and concern.
Focusing on Well-being During Uncertainty | May 21, 12:30 pm
It can be difficult to maintain routine, prioritizing well-being, and engage in self-care while navigating uncertainty and transition. In this workshop, students will define well-being, learn tips to enhance their mental, physical, and social well-being, and brainstorm ways they can stay motivated during challenging times.
Green Dot Overview for Faculty & Staff | May 27, 3 pm
The Green Dot Overview introduces the basic elements of the Green Dot Bystander Intervention program, focusing specifically on the vital role university employees play in establishing & reinforcing campus culture that students and colleagues exist within. The program will help employees understand the expanded role of “Bystander” and to equip university employees to integrate within their current job functions key behaviors that establish two norms: 1) power-based personal violence won’t be tolerated, 2) everyone- including faculty, staff & administrators- does their part to keep the campus community free from violence & fear of violence. Offered online via Zoom.
