Ben Richardson’s research primarily involves the development and use of electrophysiology techniques to evaluate synaptic function and coding properties in the cerebellum and sensory thalamus. As a graduate student in Don Caspary’s lab at Southern Illinois University – School of Medicine, he worked on understanding synaptic and coding properties that are altered in the aged auditory thalamus. He went on to be a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida with Habibeh Khoshbouei to characterize novel mechanisms regulating the trafficking of neuronal membrane proteins. Then, as a postdoc in David Rossi’s lab at Washington State University, he worked to understand the role that the cerebellum plays in alcohol use disorder. Broadly, Richardson’s research program at U of I evaluates mechanisms of cerebellar processing and how activity in the cerebellum impacts activity patterns of other brain regions in physiological and pathophysiological conditions (e.g. autism, alcoholism and ataxia).
