Dr. Shrestha researches and teaches in areas related to Biological and Agricultural engineering. His undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. degrees were in Agricultural Engineering. His undergraduate, masters, and doctorate were in Agricultural Engineering. He has secured more than six million dollars of external competitive research grant funding working in more than twenty projects. His current research projects have mainly been funded by US DOE, USDA, and US EPA. He has published in more than 70 research articles, the majority of which are peer-reviewed publications.

Shrestha is a registered professional engineer in the state of Idaho and holds one U.S. patent in developing a method and apparatus in automated soil sampler for potato combined harvesters (US Patent # 8051725 B2). He teaches interdisciplinary engineering design courses BE 478: Engineering Design I during the fall semester and BE 479: Engineering Design II in the spring semester. Additionally, he teaches technical elective courses BE 411 Energy and Environmental Auditing and BE 421 Bio-Image Processing. Dr. Shrestha is the Director of the Industrial Assessment Center at the University which provides internship opportunities in conducting real industrial auditing to upper-division engineering students form all six engineering departments under the College of Engineering.
