How it works
The public, including U of I students and employees, can purchase surplus items for individual use only through pre-priced sales, sealed bid sales or online auctions via Public Surplus.
All items are sold as is, where is — with no warranties or guarantees on condition. Buyers are responsible for assessing the item's condition before purchase.
Note: University of Idaho reserves the right to sell any item to a public agency before the close of a sale and may withdraw items from sale at any time.

Purchasing items in the store
For small items: Take the item directly from the shelf to the checkout counter.
For large items: Remove the price tag and bring the tag to the counter for purchase.
After payment, please show your receipt to a staff member for assistance with retrieving and loading your items. Staff may be able to assist with loading when possible.
Important: We do not offer storage for purchased items. All items must be removed from the warehouse by closing time on the day of the sale.
Pricing
Prices for non-auction items at Campus Surplus are based on the fair market value of state-owned property. Pricing aligns with state regulations to ensure transparency, fairness to both public agencies and private buyers and responsible return on state assets.
Prices typically range from 20% to 80% of the original retail cost, depending on factors like condition, demand, quality and market availability. Fair market values are determined using data from industry pricing guides, online auction platforms and regional surplus dealers.
Payment
Payment can be made with cash, Visa card, MasterCard, Discover card or an American Express card. Items over $1,000 will be held with a 10% deposit. Payment in full is to be made the following day by cashier's check or cash.
Purchasing items in online auctions
University of Idaho surplus items available for purchase via auction are posted online as they become available. Visit PublicSurplus and use search filters to view available items. In-person viewing is encouraged before bidding. To schedule an appointment, call 208-885-2091 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Thursday).
A 10% buyer’s premium (minimum $1 per auction) will be added to the final sale price. This amount will be visible during the bidding process and included in your total.
To promote fairness and reduce default bids, bid deposits may be required.
Note: Winning bidders are responsible for all costs related to packing, shipping, and item pickup.
Tie bids
In the event of a tie, a winner will be selected at random by our sales system. Only the winning bidder will be notified.
