Wildlife/Wetland Technician (Conservation Tech)

Job Title:      Wildlife/Wetland Technician (Conservation Tech)

Location:       Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area near Pleasanton, Kansas (50 miles south of Overland Park)

Type:   Seasonal, 40 hrs/wk

Start date:     Negotiable.

Responsibilities:       Participate in all aspects of wildlife and habitat management of 7,600-acre Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area and 4,600-acre La Cygne Lake and Wildlife Area.  Seasonal workers will gain experience in intensively managed wetlands and bottomland hardwood forests.  Seasonal worker hired for this position will likely be heavily involved in pumping water for wetlands, water level manipulation, wetland management, and general wildlife and public lands management.

Tasks include:  Wetland management, operation of water pumps, prescribed burning, tree removal with chainsaw, operation of tractors and agricultural implements (disk, rotary mower, planters, etc.), operation of skid loader with stump grinder and/or forestry cutter, timber stand improvement, litter removal, control of noxious weeds and other undesired vegetation, sign maintenance, etc.

Qualifications: Completed or enrolled in wildlife, fisheries, or other natural resource-related course of study preferred, but not required.  Interest in, and knowledge of waterfowl, wetlands, bottomland hardwood forests, farming, and/or construction will be considered in candidate selection. Must be physically fit and able to perform demanding tasks in a variety of outdoor conditions.  Must have a valid driver license.

        Low-cost housing may be available.

Pay rate:       $10.15/hr to $13.61/hr depending on experience and skills
