Fraternity and sorority living facilities
Greek living at U of I
At University of Idaho, you’ll have the opportunity to live in one of 28 Greek chapter facilities. All Panhellenic sororities and most IFC fraternities offer housing, allowing you to build lifelong connections while fulfilling the university’s first year live-on-campus requirement.
Living in a Greek house can enhance your time at U of I by providing academic support, leadership opportunities and a strong sense of community. Many members choose to live in their chapter facility for multiple years to make the most of their experience.
Greek chapter housing
Greek Life at U of I includes 28 privately owned and operated chapter facilities, home to:
- 10 Panhellenic sororities
- 18 IFC fraternities
If you join a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) organization or an unhoused IFC fraternity, you can find housing in one of U of I’s residence halls.
Most chapters with housing require or strongly encourage new members to live in the house.
Each Greek facility varies in design but typically includes:
- Living quarters for members
- Common areas for academic and social activities
- Dining facilities with meals provided
- Study spaces to support academic success
Meal plans and dining services
If you live in a Greek chapter facility, your meal plan is typically included in your house bill, though this may vary by chapter. Meals are usually provided Monday breakfast through Friday lunch, prepared by an in-house chef or catering service.
Living in your chapter’s house
As a new member, you’ll have the opportunity to live in your chapter’s house throughout your time in the organization.
University of Idaho requires all full-time, first-year students under 21 years old to live in university-recognized housing for one academic year — Greek housing meets this requirement.
Housing expectations:
- All new and initiated members are typically expected to live in their chapter house, as space allows.
- Each chapter determines how to prioritize housing assignments. We recommend asking chapters what their individual processes look like.
Financial obligations of Greek Living
Each Greek chapter facility is managed by a local or national housing corporation, separate from the university. All financial agreements, payments, and housing contracts are handled by individual chapters.
What to expect:
- House bill – Costs vary by chapter and typically cover housing, meal plans and membership dues.
- Greek activity fee – All fraternity and sorority members pay a $50 per semester fee, supporting community-wide programs and leadership training. This fee also assists with staffing in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Housing contracts are typically signed shortly after moving into the chapter facility. Before signing any housing contract, review the details carefully with your family and reach out to your chapter’s leadership for more information. It’s important that you understand the contents of any contract before signing it.
Cost of living in Greek housing
The cost of living in a Greek chapter house is often comparable to or lower than traditional university housing.
Average costs per semester:
- Sorority cost range: $3,900 - $5,300 per semester
- Fraternity cost range: $2,800 - $4,900 per semester
Your chapter will provide specific financial details during the recruitment process, so you’ll know exactly what to expect before making a commitment.
