Supporting fraternity and sorority member success

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL) provides recognized Greek organizations with comprehensive on-campus support. Our staff act as liaisons between university employees, alumni advisors, national headquarters and parents, while fostering leadership development rooted in the following core values:

    • Academic achievement — Supporting members in reaching their educational goals.
    • Community involvement — Encouraging meaningful involvement and service.
    • Belonging — Creating a welcoming and respectful environment for all.
    • Personal and professional development — Building skills for lifelong success.
    • Safety and wellbeing — Promoting physical, mental and emotional well-being.

We strive to promote a vibrant Greek community where all affiliated students find belonging, lead with integrity, foster meaningful connections, develop personally and professionally, and contribute positively to their communities through lifelong commitment to fraternal values.

We partner with all U of I-recognized Greek organizations to help them develop into lifelong, engaged leaders who are committed to their chapter’s values. We work to cultivate a community that honors individuality and strives for excellence in scholarship, leadership, innovation and service.

Our mission is to support the fraternity and sorority community by providing dedicated advising, fostering accountability and empowering affiliated students to thrive within a values-based Greek experience.

    Academic success

Academic excellence is a core value of fraternities and sororities at U of I. Each chapter sets academic expectations and provides resources to help you succeed, which could include:

    • Study hours — Dedicated time for focused learning.
    • Study tables and groups — Collaborative sessions to support your academic goals.
    • Incentives — Recognition and rewards for meeting academic milestones.

Every semester, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life collects and reviews chapter grade reports to track academic progress. These reports help measure achievements at both the regional and national levels, ensuring that our Greek community remains academically competitive.

    Greek community academic reports

Fraternities and sororities at U of I consistently outperform the general student population. Explore grade reports from previous years to see how our Greek community excels academically.

    Frequently asked questions

Have questions about fraternities, sororities, or how Greek Life works? We’ve got answers! Check out some of the most asked questions below — or reach out to us at 208‑885‑1114 or fsl@uidaho.edu.

    What is a Greek organization?

Greek-letter organizations include fraternities and sororities. They come in different forms — social, honorary and pre-professional — though not all use Greek letters. Our office supports 35 social fraternities and sororities at University of Idaho.

    What is philanthropy?

Philanthropy refers to events where organizations raise money or awareness for a charitable cause. Most chapters are connected to national or international philanthropic partners as well as local causes.

What fraternities and sororities are at University of Idaho?

We have 35 fraternities and sororities governed by one of three councils:

    • Interfraternity Council (IFC)
    • Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)
    • Panhellenic Council (PHC)
    Can I join a service or academic/honors fraternity and a social fraternity/sorority?

Yes! You can join both a service or academic fraternity and a social fraternity or sorority. However, you can’t join more than one social fraternity or sorority.

What are the advantages to Greek life?

Joining a fraternity or sorority helps make the transition to college easier by providing a built-in support network and lifelong friendships. Other benefits include:

    • Academic resources to help you succeed
    • Leadership development and hands-on experience
    • Opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community
    • Career and networking opportunities through fellow members and alumni
How much does it cost to join a fraternity or sorority?

Each chapter is self-funded through member dues, which cover housing, meals, study and recreation spaces and chapter activities.

    Average cost per semester*

    • Fraternities – $3,800
    • Sororities – $4,800

*One-time fees may apply during your first year of membership.

When can I join a fraternity or sorority?

Recruitment events are the best way to explore chapters and meet members.

    • Formal Recruitment for Panhellenic sororities and IFC fraternities happens in August before classes start.
    • Informal Recruitment happens early in the spring semester.

    Learn more about recruitment

What does the pledging/new member process look like?

All fraternities and sororities have an orientation process that typically lasts less than 10 weeks. During this time, you’ll:

    • Attend meetings to learn about the chapter’s history and values
    • Participate in personal and professional development sessions
    • Engage in community service projects

We recommend speaking with chapter leaders about the process before accepting a bid.

What is the time commitment involved with membership in a fraternity/sorority?

    Membership time commitments include:

    • Weekly chapter meetings and new member sessions
    • Philanthropy and community service events
    • Brotherhood and sisterhood events

If you pursue a leadership role, you may need to invest additional time. However, most community and philanthropy events are flexible so you can decide how involved you want to be.

How many students live in Greek housing?

Over 1,400 students are part of the Greek community at UIdaho, with more than 1,000 living in chapter houses — including about 600 first-year students on average. Greek Life makes up over 20% of the student population.

Will my academics be compromised if I join a Greek chapter?

Academics are a top priority for Greek organizations. Chapters have minimum GPA requirements and offer resources like:

    • Study groups and tutoring
    • Incentives for academic success
    • Academic support from fellow members

We recommend talking to the chapter’s academic chair to learn more before joining.

Stay connected and support your chapter as a Greek alumni

Reconnect with your chapter and governing councils to explore how you can stay involved as an alumni. Your experience and guidance can make a meaningful difference — whether through mentorship, leadership or direct support.

    Ways to give back
    • Be a mentor and role model — Share your experience and expertise to support the next generation of Greek Life members.
    • Encourage Greek involvement — Inspire others to explore fraternity and sorority life at U of I and beyond.
    • Attend alumni events — Reconnect with your chapter and fellow alumni at special events and gatherings.
    • Donate to the Fraternity and Sorority Life Opportunity Fund — Help make Greek Life accessible to future Vandals by contributing to this important fund.
    • Serve as a Chapter Advisor or House Corporation Officer — Offer guidance in key areas like budgeting, recruitment and member development. Your insight can help shape the chapter’s success.

Parents and family of Greek members

Joining a fraternity or sorority at University of Idaho is a big decision for your student — and you may be wondering how to support them during this transition and throughout their college years. Here are some ways to help them navigate the experience:

    Do your research

Take time to explore our website and learn about the different chapters at U of I. Understanding the options will help you have informed conversations with your student about their choices.

    Let them choose what fits

Every Greek organization has its own personality and values. It’s important to note that chapter culture and values can change over time. Encourage your student to join the chapter where they feel most comfortable and aligned with their values.

    Encourage academic balance

Discuss your student’s academic plan and how they’ll balance their coursework with Greek Life commitments. Many chapters offer academic support to help members succeed.

    Discuss financial commitments

Membership includes costs like room and board, meal plans and dues. Talk with your student about how they plan to cover these expenses:

    • IFC organizations – Average $3,800 per semester
    • MGC organizations – Average $300 per semester
    • PHC organizations – Average $4,800 per semester
    Support their leadership journey

Many chapters encourage involvement in other campus organizations and leadership roles within the fraternity or sorority. Ask your student how they plan to get involved and make an impact.

Know about the CARE referral process

If you have a concern about a student, you can submit a confidential CARE Referral. These referrals are reviewed by the Dean of Students Office and the Counseling and Mental Health Center to ensure a student receives the support they need.
