Academic Regalia

Academic regalia, commonly called cap and gown, is required when participating in the University of Idaho commencement ceremonies. Purchasing academic regalia is coordinated by the Alumni Office at GradFest or online options for off-campus students.

Bachelor's Candidates

The cap and gown are black.  The color of the tassel is determined by the discipline to which the major field of study belongs.

Tassel Colors for Bachelor's Majors

All bachelor's majors in the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences wear a maize tassel.

Bachelors with a major in art wear a white tassel and all other bachelor's majors in the College of Art & Architecture wear a brown tassel.

All bachelor's majors in the College of Business & Economics wear a drab tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Career & Technical Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education wear a light blue tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Athletic Training, Dance, Exercise Science & Health, Physical Education, and Recreation wear a sage green tassel.

All bachelor's majors in the College of Engineering wear an orange tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Advertising, Broadcasting & Digital Media, Journalism, and Public Relations wear a crimson tassel.

Bachelor's majors in American Studies, Anthropology, English, Foreign Language, French, General Studies, History, Interdisciplinary Studies (B.A.), International Studies, Latin-American Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Spanish, and Theatre Arts (B.A. & B.S) wear a white tassel; Theatre Arts (B.F.A.) wear a brown tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Economics wear a copper tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Interdisciplinary Studies (B.S.), Organizational Sciences, and Psychology wear a golden yellow tassel.

Bachelor's majors in all disciplines of Music and Music Education wear a pink tassel.

Bachelor's majors in Philosophy wear a dark blue tassel.


All bachelor's majors in the College of Natural Resources wear a russet tassel.

All bachelor's majors in the College of Science wear a golden yellow tassel.

Master's and Specialist Candidates

The cap, tassel, and gown are black.  The shape of the master's and specialist's gown sleeve is oblong.  A hood is worn over the gown, lined with the colors of the university—silver and gold.  The color of the hood's trim is determined by the discipline to which the major field of study belongs.

Art majors in the M.A.T. program wear a white hood and all other graduate majors in the College of Art & Architecture wear a brown hood.

Al graduate majors in the College of Engineering wear an orange hood. 

Interdisciplinary majors in the M.A. program wear a white hood and M.S. wear a golden yellow hood.

Graduate majors in Anthropology, English, History, Political Science, and Teaching English as a Second Language wear a white hood.

Graduate majors in Creative Writing and Theatre Arts wear a brown hood.

Graduate majors in Music wear a pink hood.

Graduate majors in Philosophy wear a dark blue hood.

Graduate majors in Psychology wear a golden yellow hood.

Graduate majors in Public Administration wear a peacock blue hood.

All graduate majors in the College of Natural Resources wear a russet hood. 

All graduate majors in the College of Science wear a golden yellow hood.

Doctoral Candidates

Doctoral candidates, including those earning a Juris Doctor, wear a cap or tam with an old gold colored tassel.  The gown is silver with black velvet panels down the front and across the sleeves.  A hood is worn over the gown, lined with the colors of the university—silver and gold.  The color of the hood's trim is royal blue for all Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) candidates representing the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship, regardless of discipline.  Other doctorate hood colors are determined by the discipline to which the major field of study belongs.

All majors of Ph.D. degrees wear a dark blue hood. 

All majors of Ed.D. degrees wear a light blue hood.

Athletic Training majors of D.A.T. degrees wear a sage green hood. 

All Law majors of J.D. degrees wear a purple hood.

Honor Cords

Bachelor's and Juris Doctor candidates eligible for university honors—summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude—receive an honor cord to wear over their gown.  Candidates approved to participate in commencement before degree completion are not eligible for university honors recognition at the commencement ceremony.
