Monitoring Soil Nutrients Using a Management Unit Approach

PNW0570

December 31, 2002

This publication focuses on how to design a soil nutrient monitoring strategy using management units or zones for soil testing and nutrient application. The management unit approach is designed to provide better information to make nutrient management decisions at a reasonable cost. Key questions to consider when developing a soil testing strategy for nutrient management are discussed. Two examples of nutrient monitoring are provided to illustrate the decision process as well as how to interpret soil test results.
