The University of Idaho Advanced Ranch Management School is designed for mid-career to experienced ranchers. This school will enhance business and management skills and decision making to improve economic and resource sustainability of ranches.

Twin Falls — Dec. 4-8, local time (MT)

Monday, Dec. 4 — Kickoff Day (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; social 5 p.m.)

  • Tour a feedlot and discuss retained ownership.
  • Improve your personnel management and learn your management style.
  • Have dinner while listening to an industry leader discuss the future of the beef industry.

Tuesday, Dec. 5 — Meats Day (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

  • Tour the True West Beef plant
  • Learn about beef grading, certification and value.
  • See carcass fabrication from start to finish.

Wednesday, Dec. 6 — The Business Essentials (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)

  • Learn about financial essentials, planning and tools.
  • Gain insight into obtaining business capital.
  • Examine risk management options.
  • Get the latest beef market outlook information.

Thursday, Dec. 7 — Grazing and Forage Management (8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

  • Understand and evaluate stocking rates.
  • Examine alternative forages and grazing systems.
  • Learn strategic supplementation for improved performance.
  • Discuss forage related animal health problems.
  • Gain a better understanding of adaptive management and outcome-based management.

Friday, Dec. 8 — Advances in Nutrition, Reproduction and Genetics (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • Overcome barriers to using technology in beef production.
  • Learn how to use body condition scoring to manage nutrition.
  • Use a basic computer program to evaluate cattle diet and feeding options.
  • Trouble shoot reproductive problems using new information on reproductive management.
  • Hands-on examination of technology in ranching.
  • Gain a greater understanding and improve utilizing genetic resources in beef herds.

Cost — $500 per person or $800 per couple for the full five-day program
Individual days — $150 each
