Honoring the past, serving the present

Memorial Gym is a beloved and historic venue located on the south end of campus. This multi-use facility hosts a 2,500-seat gymnasium for athletic competitions, academic classes and community events.

Within its walls, you’ll find:

  • A full-size gymnasium
  • Academic and physical education classes
  • ROTC Army offices (B-38)
  • Men’s and women’s locker rooms
  • A combative room

Memorial Gym also hosts a variety of university and community events, including:

  • Vandal volleyball and basketball games
  • Statewide gymnastics meets
  • Regional basketball tournaments

Building history

Known affectionately as “Mem Gym,” the Memorial Gymnasium was built to honor Idahoans who lost their lives in World War I (1914–1918). Completed in 1928, the building is the oldest athletic facility on campus and a standout example of Collegiate Gothic architecture.

Designed by University of Idaho faculty members, the building features ornate details, including gargoyles shaped like early football players. Its stained-glass windows, buttressed walls and tower give it a distinct and memorable presence.

Renovation highlights

  • 1950s: West-end expansion and interior upgrades
  • 2009: Masonry restoration
  • 2012: Seismic bracing and tower repairs

Visitors and students alike appreciate the building’s historic charm and patriotic foyer.

Reserve Memorial Gym

Memorial Gym is available for reservations, from sporting events to ceremonies. Whether you’re planning a competition, student event or community program, the gym’s unique atmosphere makes it a one-of-a-kind venue.
