In-Between Places

The Prichard Art Gallery presents work from University of Idaho 2020 Master of Fine Arts recipients. The exhibit includes work from recent graduating master’s students Kaleb Bass, Theresa Rushing, Dongming Zhao and Robbie Mann from the College of Art and Architecture’s department of Art and Design. Students’ mediums include sculptural digital video installation, painting and more.

While many 2020 MFA candidates had their exhibits go to an online-only format, the University of Idaho is committed to celebrating the work of its students with a physical presentation. Originally scheduled to open last May, we’re proud to present this work now.

  • Kaleb Bass: Bass’s installation, “Connected by Water,” expresses Bass’s upbringing along the Salmon River and continued relationships with Northwest watersheds. The suspended fabric and projected video that make up the installation engage the question of how we — as humans — settle our weight into dynamic landscapes as part of an intricate community.
  • Theresa Rushing: Rushing's work explores the often-neglected nature of wisdom in conjunction with dead foliage. Her work provides a space to ponder the intricate ink detailing of the foliage and the thought provoking yet often meandering phrases that accompany them.
  • Dongming Zhao: Born in Chengde, China, Zhao creates works from her observations and experiences in both her Chinese culture of origin and her new home in America. In her journey, she embraces a new aesthetic that has emerged from combining traditional Eastern and Western art. She has introduced a novel technique of fabric painting which has allowed her to combine Chinese painting and oil painting to show Eastern and Western art coexisting and complementing one another.
  • Robbie Mann: Mann explores the human condition through his drawings, paintings and installation work. Influenced by the work of German Expressionists, Mann’s characters are often displayed in cartoonish and grotesque forms with vividly intense colors. Creating a visual display through the use of psychology and sardonic humor, each imagined character is inspired through observation of contemporary life, products of our time and reflections of our inner emotional state. Mann has made the decision to remain in Montana and not return to participate in the exhibit.
