Setting up accounts
For students who registered on May 7, 2025 or after:
Students who registered for a course on or after May 7, 2025, are not required to create a University of Idaho (U of I) account.
ISI has transitioned registration to the Keep Learning Idaho platform, which allows students to register and log in using a personal email address or a U of I email account.
However, if you would like to access University of Idaho library services or view your completed courses on your unofficial transcripts, you will need to create a U of I student account. Follow the new student account instructions below to set up your U of I account.
If you do not know your Vandal number, submit an ISI Support Request.
For students who registered before May 7, 2025:
Students who registered for a course before May 7, 2025 are required to use their University of Idaho (U of I) student account to access:
- Your course in Canvas
- Your U of I email via Office 365
- U of I library resources
- Unofficial transcripts
To activate your account, you’ll need access to the phone number or email address you used when registering, as well as your Vandal number (V-number).
You can find your V-number in your registration confirmation letter. If you can’t locate it, please submit an ISI Support Request.
ISI Support request
For account help, contact Independent Study Idaho.
Set up a new student account
Complete the process to set up a new student account described using the New Student Guide.
If you encounter any problems during the setup process, submit a service ticket at support.uidaho.edu. When submitting a ticket, include the following information:
- Your name
- Your V-number
- A note that indicates you are an Independent Study in Idaho student
- A short description of your problem (including screenshots and error messages when appropriate)
If you have not received registration confirmation or your course does not appear on Canvas within three business days, submit an ISI Support Request.
Disability services
Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have documented temporary or permanent disabilities. Disability services will notify ISI and your instructor regarding accommodation(s) needed for a course if you are eligible.
Each ISI course is sponsored by one of our cooperating institutions. All accommodations must be approved through the disability services office at the institution sponsoring a course. You may see contact information listed below.
Exam accommodation documentation does not carry over to subsequent courses and are not retroactive.

Policies
You are responsible for following ISI's policies and procedures provided below.
Language requirements
Proficiency of the English language is essential to complete ISI courses successfully. Students whose primary language is not English must read the course-sponsoring institution's language requirement policy.
Internet access requirement
Internet access is required for ISI courses to access courses in Canvas and other course materials.
Computer requirements
For technology requirements, refer to the course descriptions within the ISI Course Catalog. If you have additional questions, please submit an ISI Support Request.
Academic integrity
Independent Study in Idaho students are responsible for maintaining high academic standards and integrity as defined in the course-sponsoring institution's student affairs website.
Honesty is a fundamental value of learning and the educational process and promotes values and activities to instill high standards of academic integrity, civility and citizenship. Acts of academic dishonesty, including cheating or plagiarism, are considered a serious transgression and may result in a grade of F for a course.
Confidentiality of student records
Student information is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Independent Study in Idaho instructors and staff may release a student’s education and/or financial records by telephone or email to select individuals or organizations if that student files a Release of Information Form with the ISI office. Mail or fax this form to ISI.
For more information about FERPA, access the Faculty-Staff Handbook, Chapter 2: Student Affairs Policies, Student Education Records, Section 2600.
FERPA may be more permissive or restrictive than the privacy and public information laws of some states. Therefore, the Idaho Public Records Law must be considered when ISI addresses issues related to student records.
Registration materials
Upon registration, you will receive a registration confirmation email and an emailed receipt. Within six hours you will also receive an email indicating that your account has been added to your Canvas course. You may begin your course immediately after you have been added to the course in Canvas. You can take up to one year to complete a course.
If you would like to access library services or unofficial transcripts and you're not sure how to set up your account, submit an ISI Support Request.
Keep Learning Idaho account / University of Idaho accounts
ISI has transitioned course registration to the Keep Learning Idaho platform which allows you to register and login using your personal email address, or a University of Idaho email account.
If you would like to access UIdaho library services or unofficial transcripts, and you're not sure how to set up your account, submit an ISI Support Request.
If you need help with your University of Idaho accounts, visit OIT help or email support@uidaho.edu. Make sure to include that you are an Independent Study in Idaho student in your message. You can email from any email address.
Assignments
Course assignments and other course material are delivered online through Canvas. Although all assignments are available, you are required to complete assignments and exams in the order outlined in the course.
There are a given number of assignments linked to a specific exam and they are the building blocks for subsequent assignments and exams. Wait until the grade/feedback on the current exam is returned before submitting subsequent assignments and exams.
You can work at your own pace within the limits set by the course instructor on the number of assignments that can be submitted per week.
Instructors will grade assignments within three weeks after the date of receipt but are not required to grade faster than the maximum number of assignments per week listed in the course rules.
You must complete all assignments and exams to be eligible for a final course grade.
Repeating ISI Courses
Generally, ISI courses that are unfinished at the end of the enrollment period or ISI courses that are failed can be repeated.
If you choose to repeat an ISI course, you will start the new attempt at the beginning of the course and will need to redo all work (homework, tests, essays, etc.) previously submitted as part of an earlier attempt in the course.
If you would like to appeal for your work in a previous attempt to roll over to the new attempt, you can submit an appeal to this policy within 14 days of enrolling in the new attempt of the course.
Extensions
Hardship withdrawal
Occasionally, students experience hardships which prevent them from continuing their Independent Study in Idaho courses. In these cases, students can apply for a hardship withdrawal.
Examples of hardship include, but are not limited to, medical or health emergencies, death or illness of a loved one and demonstrated financial loss. Hardship withdrawals are available to students who are withdrawing from all Independent Study in Idaho coursework after the regular drop date.
If you would like to request a hardship withdrawal, you must provide the following information to the Independent Study in Idaho office:
A personal statement letter:
- Describe your extenuating circumstance(s) that occurred after the refund deadline. Include specific dates when events occurred and how these circumstances impacted your ability to be academically successful.
- Explain why you did not withdraw from your Independent Study in Idaho courses before the refund deadline.
- Describe the steps you took to address your extenuating circumstances as they began affecting your academic life.
Supporting documentation:
Gather documentation which supports your request and verifies the circumstances and dates stated in your letter.
Documentation should be on business letterhead of a certifying person, e.g. doctor, lawyer, counselor, employer, etc. Hospital bills, legal writs, family obituaries and other related documentation of circumstances are also acceptable.
Submissions without supporting documentation will be denied.
Pre-requisites
Some ISI courses require pre-requisites to be fulfilled during registration. Visit the ISI Courses Catalog to check if the course you want to register for requires completion of a pre-requisite.
Proof of completed pre-requisite requirement is required at the time of registration and typically consists of unofficial transcripts and/or reports of standardized test scores that show pre-requisite completion.
Registrations without pre-requisite documents will not be processed.
Libraries
University of Idaho Library resources are available to ISI students, including electronic journal databases and eBook collections. To gain access to these resources, you can use your Canvas username and password. Students who are Idaho residents and nonresidents who live within a 50-mile radius of University of Idaho may visit the library to obtain a guest card that is valid for one year. Students who can’t visit the U of I Library should contact their local library for information about borrowing materials through interlibrary loan.
The U of I Library has people and resources to help you succeed in research for this course. The library website has many databases that will help you find relevant and reliable books, articles, images and more, with many available online.
- See a general overview of library resources.
- Get started on research in the U of I Library.
- Evaluate information sources using lateral reading tutorial.
Don’t hesitate to contact a U of I librarian for research assistance, either in person at the library reference desk or by phone, email or chat.
