The Conduct Process FAQ

Find answers below to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the University of Idaho's Student Code of Conduct and disciplinary process that follows a Student Code violation.

Conduct Process FAQ

If you are involved or alleged to be involved in a violation of the Student Code, you will be sent an invitation through a notification letter via your Vandal email to meet with a conduct hearing officer. The notification will outline your rights as a student and the specific charges and provide an overview of the conduct process. You will be given a date and time for your meeting.

At the meeting, you will be greeted by a hearing officer who will help you with the conduct process. You will review the informal or formal resolution options and you can decide how you would like to proceed. You can read more about these two options here.

Most meetings take about 30 minutes and are in person. Accommodations can be made to use Zoom if you are unable to meet in person.

Yes, you are welcome to have a friend or advocate join you for support but be advised that the individual will not be able to speak on your behalf.

You are not required to meet with the hearing officer, and you can choose not to engage. If you fail to appear for your appointment and do not respond to a request to reschedule within a reasonable period, the decision as to whether a violation has occurred may be reached in your absence.

We will not discuss your case with your parents unless you provide written consent or if the situation falls under one of the exceptions for parental notification. We encourage you to let them know if you need extra support.

FERPA is the Family Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law that provides confidentiality of student educational records. Your conduct record is internal but is part of your overall educational record. It cannot be released without your permission.

Disciplinary actions will not appear on your transcript, with the exception of suspension and expulsion.

It is highly unlikely that you will be expelled for violating the Student Code of Conduct. At the end of the investigative process, you may be found responsible or not responsible for the violation.

If you are found responsible, educational outcomes may be assigned and an administrative fee of $150 will be assessed to your student account. You will also be given a status with the university that could include a warning, probation or suspension.

An educational outcome is an opportunity to learn and grow from your incident. It is assigned during the conduct process and is determined using factors such as the nature and severity of the violation and the impact on the campus and larger community. It could range from writing a reflection paper to participating in a service project.

A student may be involved in a criminal court proceeding and engage in our process for the same alleged conduct. Our process uses a preponderance of the evidence standard to find students in violation, which is not as high as the standard used in criminal justice proceedings.
