What is the 3+3 law program?

The 3+3 program allows you to complete your undergraduate while you start your law degree. With approval from your major advisor and department chair, you can count up to 30 law school credits towards completing your undergraduate degree during your fourth year (first year of law school).

Preparing for the 3+3 program

Eligibility criteria

  • Satisfy all requirements set by your undergraduate institution
  • Academic standing: Maintain a cumulative undergraduate U of I GPA of 3.3 or higher.
  • You must be attending one of these schools
    • University of Idaho
    • North Idaho College (in conjunction with the University of Idaho)
    • College of Idaho
    • Lewis-Clark State College
    • Brigham Young University–Idaho

It’s recommended that your undergraduate program focuses on:

  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • History
  • English
  • Economics
  • Business

While the American Bar Association doesn’t require a specific undergraduate field of study to enroll into law school, they do encourage degree paths that promote the development of strong research, writing and analytical skills. Philosophy and political science are especially effective for law preparation.

3 + 3 Application process

Sophomore year

Summer following sophomore year

Make plans to take the LSAT in June following your sophomore year or September of your junior year. You must achieve an LSAT score at or above the College of Law’s median.

Junior year

  • Apply to College of Law no later than January 15
  • Provide verification letter from the department chair where you will be receiving your bachelor’s degree that shows at least 90 completed semester hours (144 quarter hours)
  • After you’ve been accepted, submit the 3+3 program course substitution form.
