FAQ

  • Take one or several individual courses as a non-degree seeking student
  • You may also complete the 15-credit certificate in Fire Ecology, Management and Technology.
  • Pursue the MNR degree specializing in fire, including 30 credits with a professional project. We recommend you complete the fire certificate as part of your MNR degree or complete the MNR Fire Ecology and Management option.

Graduate courses require a student to understand the primary scientific literature. Graduate courses demand further synthesis of scientific information. As a graduate student, you are required to be much more independent in the learning process than you were as an undergraduate. This means you get to self-direct your learning more.

Yes. You can challenge any university course to earn credit by examination. This requires getting permission from professor teaching the course, their department and the College of Graduate Studies. See section I of the University of Idaho catalog for more information.

NWCG training courses do not count towards college credit unless they have been recorded on a college transcript at an accredited university. Having had NWCG training will help you get more from related university courses. For instance, you’ll learn a lot more about fire behavior if you have experience with fires and you have had S-290 and beyond. If you have advanced NWCG planning trained or you have earned college credit for those courses, email the MNR director about how those can be counted toward your certificate or MNR degree requirement.

We provide the education to complement your training and experience. Training is primarily skills-based, focuses on the "how to", and is more narrowly focused on fire management. Education is more information-based, focuses on the "why", and more broadly includes fire science, management and policy, and the knowledge on which they are based.

A limited number of course credits can be transferred from other universities if they fit into the current course bins and are approved by the faculty.

  • For the Fire Ecology, Management and Technology certificate, six of the required 15 credits can be made up of transfer credits, overage credits, or credits from an undergraduate transcript for courses which were not required for the student’s undergraduate degree. At least eight credits must be from the University of Idaho, and at least nine credits must be above the 400-level. Coursework used towards the certificate cannot be more than five years old.
  • For the MNR degree, 12 of the 30-credit graduate program can be made up of transfer credits, overage credits, or credits from an undergraduate transcript for courses, which were not required for the student’s undergraduate degree. At least 18 credits must be from the University of Idaho, and at least 18 credits must be numbered 500 or above.

Please email the faculty with any questions.

Students may receive experiential learning credit. See section I of the University of Idaho catalog for more information.
