University House
Connecting campus through history, hospitality and art
University House is the official residence of the University of Idaho president and so much more. Completed in 2019, the home serves as a warm, welcoming space for small gatherings, university events and community connections. Designed to reflect the spirit of the campus, the house seamlessly blends tradition, beauty and purpose.
Positioned between the arboretum and the university core, University House symbolizes the connection between learning and living, tradition and progress, university and community.
Architectural highlights include:
- A dark exterior that blends into the surrounding landscape
- North-facing orientation to showcase sweeping arboretum views
- Large dormer windows and natural materials that connect indoor and outdoor spaces
- Modern metal siding and accents for lasting durability and visual appeal
Meet the architect
Robert Zimmer grew up just blocks from University of Idaho’s campus and once delivered newspapers to the original president’s house. Today, he is the architect behind University House’s modern design — one that thoughtfully balances the need for both private living space and formal entertaining, all while honoring the project’s practical budget.
In-house student art gallery
Located inside the University House, this rotating gallery showcases artwork by students from the College of Art and Architecture. The gallery invites guests to explore emerging talent and creative expression in a setting designed for community and conversation.
University House Art Collection
In addition to the student art gallery, University House features works from the University Art Collection and private donations. Each piece was thoughtfully selected to complement the home’s natural surroundings, with warm tones and wilderness-inspired themes enhancing the overall sense of place.
