The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) at University of Idaho supports the professional and personal growth of postdoctoral researchers across all disciplines. We work with students, faculty and staff to provide useful resources for the postdoc community and to improve the overall postdoc experience at U of I. OPA will help prepare you for successful entry and advancement in your career path of choice.
Who are our postdocs
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs serves any researcher in any program or department at U of I who has a doctoral degree and is working in a training position under faculty mentorship. This includes postdoctoral fellows, research associates and some part-time and visiting researchers. Most postdoc appointments last two to three years, with a five-year maximum.
A recent survey of our current postdocs showed that they come from all continents, and two-thirds of our postdocs are international. Female representation is around 40 percent of all postdocs.
Services and support
OPA provides a variety of services to enrich the postdoc experience:
- Career services — Guidance, resume/CV support and job preparation
- Fund your research — Support finding funding, developing and submitting proposals, managing awards and disseminating research.
- Mentoring and teaching — Help setting up mentoring relationships and teaching opportunities with undergraduate and graduate students
- Community events — Social activities to foster connection and collaboration among your peers
Professional development
University of Idaho is a member of the National Postdoc Association (NPA). The NPA is the national organization that helps represent, support and assist postdocs develop their careers and improve their working conditions. The association holds regular meetings, webinars, workshops and produces other resources that positively impact postdocs individually and jointly. As a U of I postdoc you can use this institutional membership to get free Affiliate Individual Membership.
