U of I research beyond the lab, across the state

At University of Idaho, our commitment to research extends beyond campus, impacting communities and industries across the state of Idaho. Our research directly influences the agricultural, geological, environmental and technological landscapes of Idaho, driving our state forward.

Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment

Agribusiness is vital to Idaho’s economy and a key source of employment in the state. As livestock, dairy, crop production and food processing continue to grow and intersect in complex ways, University of Idaho is taking the lead. Through the Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE), we’ll address critical challenges like water usage and environmental quality while supporting the industries that feed our state — and the world.

Rinker Rock Creek Ranch

Set in central Idaho’s Wood River Valley, Rinker Rock Creek Ranch is a living laboratory unlike any other. With more than 20,000 acres of public and private rangeland, University of Idaho uses this expansive landscape to explore solutions related to rangeland management, restoration and conservation. It’s here that education, research and outreach come together to serve Idaho’s people, environments and industries.

Idaho Geological Survey

Since 1919, the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) has been the state’s trusted source for geologic data, maps and expertise. From mineral resources and groundwater to earthquakes and landslides, IGS provides essential information to support public safety, economic development and scientific research.

Taylor Wilderness Research Station

Taylor Wilderness Research Station is a gateway to discovery in the heart of the Frank Church – River of No Return Wilderness. Surrounded by 2.39 million acres of rugged, protected landscape, the station provides a unique setting for research, education and conservation in Idaho’s most remote ecosystem.

Rangeland Center

Consisting of half the state’s land, Idaho’s rangelands are at the center of some of today’s most pressing land-use issues — balancing agriculture, energy, conservation, recreation and community growth. U of I's Rangeland Center brings together researchers, educators and partners from across the state to explore science-based solutions for sustainable rangeland management.

Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center

Located in Lemhi County, the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center serves as University of Idaho’s primary site for cow-calf and forage research. Operating on a commercial scale, the center supports industry-relevant research while providing hands-on learning for students and continuing education for livestock professionals.

Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)

Idaho EPSCoR is dedicated to driving research in emerging fields, empowering Idaho to compete at the highest levels within National Science Foundation programs and other key research programs. By strengthening the state’s research and development capacity, Idaho EPSCoR is advancing science and engineering capabilities to create a lasting impact on Idaho’s innovation and technological future.
