  • University of Michigan Law School, Juris Doctor, 2008
  • University of Michigan, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, 2004
  • Boise State University, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 2002

Tim Murphy joined the College of Law as a Visiting Associate Professor in 2018 and directs the Entrepreneurship Law Clinic. Tim specializes in intellectual property law and in particular, IP licensing issues. He is licensed in the state and Federal courts in Idaho, California, and Oregon.

Before joining the College of Law, Tim was Senior Patent and Trademark Counsel at Micron Technology, Inc. His responsibilities at Micron included managing a portion of Micron’s patent and non-patent IP portfolios. Additionally, Tim was responsible for collaborating with other legal and non-legal professionals in addressing Micron brand-related issues, such as maintaining the legal portions of Micron’s websites. Tim also spent many years at Micron doing intellectual property licensing in support of Micron’s M&A, joint venture, and joint development programs, in addition to supporting day-to-day business operations.

Tim maintains an active presence within Idaho’s pro bono community. He is a member of the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program (IVLP) Policy Council and usually has multiple pro bono representations in progress at any given time. Tim’s pro bono work includes representation in several areas of the law, such as child protection, family law, civil rights, and small business issues.

Prior to joining the Micron legal team, Tim practiced as a patent attorney/agent for several years in Portland, Oregon and Boise, Idaho. Before attending the University of Michigan Law School, Tim held various positions with multiple companies, including R&D engineer, manufacturing engineer, equipment technician, hydroelectric plant operator, and diesel truck mechanic. Tim also served six years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear reactor plant mechanic and, as a crew member on board the U.S.S. South Carolina, participated in Operation Desert Storm.
