Should Producers Test Solid Dairy Manure and Dairy Manure Compost Before Land Application?

BUL0997

April 29, 2021

Idaho's dairy industry generates substantial amounts of manure each year. Consequently, the state is a prolific producer of natural and nutrient-rich fertilizer. University of Idaho researchers take a closer look at the potential benefits by examining the value of solid manure and manure compost. In this 2018 survey of fourteen southern Idaho commercial dairies, they conclude that by improving management of their animals diet and their manure-handling and storage practices, Idaho dairy farmers could significantly reduce commercial fertilizer usage while improving crop production and soil health.
