College of Natural Resources — Using drones in resource management
Drones are more than just toys—they’re powerful tools used in natural resource research and management. Today, drones help with mapping, surveying, monitoring wildlife, managing forests and rangelands and even fighting wildfires. In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how University of Idaho uses drones in real-world projects. You’ll also see some of the drones from the U of I Drone Lab and learn about opportunities for students to gain experience flying and working with drones while studying at U of I.
College of Natural Resources — How recreation impacts that land
Explore how activities like hiking and heavy foot traffic can affect soil and plant life. In this hands-on session, you’ll use scientific tools to measure soil compaction and see how repeated trampling changes soil structure. You’ll also observe how vegetation and topsoil can be disturbed by recreation. By testing how easily water moves through different soils, you’ll discover how human activity can impact ecosystems while getting hands-on experience with real research methods used by scientists.
College of Natural Resources — Wildlife tracking
Ever wondered how scientists find animals once they disappear into the wild? In this hands-on session, you’ll use radio receivers and Yagi antennas—the same tools wildlife biologists use—to track animals “tagged” with radio transmitters roaming the great steppe of the Idaho soccer fields. Radio telemetry helps scientists study animal movements, migration patterns and where animals go to find food or raise their young. Come test your tracking skills and see how biologists study wildlife in action!
College of Science — Don’t just study science, DO science
Are you fascinated by new discoveries? Have you thought about a career in medicine? Space exploration? Mining or geology? Data science? Do you think about the world’s problems and wonder how you can help solve them? Learn about undergraduate research opportunities in the College of Science and hear from current students who are already making a difference. Includes a stop at the Northern Branch of the Idaho Museum of Natural History, located here on campus.
