U of I TRIO programs
TRIO-INSPIRE, providing educational opportunity for all Americans
University of Idaho launched its first TRIO program, Upward Bound, in 1968 — one of the first in the country. Today, the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences runs six TRIO programs that support students who are low-income, first-generation or from underrepresented backgrounds.
TRIO was created by Congress to help more Americans attend and complete college, regardless of race, background or income. Funded through the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, TRIO now supports nearly 800,000 people across more than 2,800 projects nationwide. U of I has received TRIO funding continuously since the beginning.

TRIO-INSPIRE outreach and engagement projects
Benewah-Latah Upward Bound
Benewah Latah Upward Bound provides post-secondary educational and career preparatory support and guidance to students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. We are dedicated to working with scholars to develop into their full potential as the future stewards of the community, our nation and our interconnected world. Services include tutoring, academic coaching, mentoring, summer academic enrichment and financial literacy. We strongly encourage all participants to actively engage in as many of these activities and services as possible. We serve students at Lakeside High School in Plummer, Idaho, Potlatch Junior/Senior High School in Potlatch, Idaho and Paradise Creek Regional High School in Moscow, Idaho.
Silver Valley Upward Bound
Silver Valley Upward Bound is committed to ensuring that students in the rural target area receive college and career exploration opportunities on par with those afforded to their urban and suburban counterparts. SVUB students are provided with high-quality supplementary educational opportunities that allow for the development of character and leadership skills that will prepare them for success in high school and college. Our mission is to assist low-income and first-generation students in the Silver Valley who wish to pursue postsecondary education or vocational training, with services offered online and in-person at Kellogg and Wallace high schools.
Bridge Idaho
Bridge Idaho is an organization dedicated to educational opportunity, college access and achievement in higher education for low-income and first-generation students. We act as a resource and advocate for our participants preparing for, transitioning to and attending higher education institutions. Programs that fall under Bridge Idaho include Lapwai and Orofino Upward Bound and Kamiah and Clearwater Valley Upward Bound. Bridge Idaho also partners with the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee Local Education Program, College Access Challenge Grant, Summer Food Service Program, numerous other programs and extension offices from the University of Idaho and other regional institutions. McNair Program
The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is a comprehensive program structured to prepare undergraduates for successful careers as graduate students, professors and professional researchers. At University of Idaho, the McNair Program will provide services to at least twenty-five students each year.
All students participate in academic year and summer graduate preparatory activities until they graduate and enroll in a doctoral program. TRIO McNair Scholars are motivated students who have both the desire and the potential to earn a doctorate degree. Scholars participating in the program increase and refine their academic skills and learn the tools necessary to be successful in graduate school.
Educational Opportunity Center
Thinking about returning to school, upgrading your skills or completing a technical career training program? The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) can help you form realistic educational goals and identify programs that match your needs. Our advisors can assist with:
- Obtaining your GED or High School Completion
- Exploring careers
- Comparing programs and schools
- Completing admissions and enrollment requirements
- Identifying and filling out financial aid forms and verification paperwork
- Defaulted student loan counseling
We are here to help you attain your degree. Because we are funded by a federal grant, all our services are free. The primary goal of EOC is to increase the number of adults 19 and older enrolled in educational and career programs after high school. In some instances, EOC may serve individuals younger than 19, such as individuals who have enrolled in alternative education programs.
The Educational Opportunity Center is based out of University of Idaho Boise and is funded to serve Ada and Canyon Counties.
Educational Talent Search
The TRIO Educational Talent Search program identifies and assists eligible Kootenai County youths in sixth through 12th grades who have the potential to succeed in higher education, but because of their individual circumstances would likely not pursue postsecondary education. The program provides academic, career and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue to complete their postsecondary education.
STEM Access
We provide real-world STEM learning, field-trips, college preparation, and campus experiences. We support the path of our students through high school toward college and career. Projects include Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) in the Lewis-Clark Valley, Idaho NASA NESSP robotics challenges, high school geology and biophysics internships. Contact STEM Access
