2021 Rangeland Fall Forum

From Drought to Resilience was a Virtual Event presented on October 5, 6 and 6 which focused on the current drought gripping western rangelands. The University of Idaho (U of I) Rangeland Center, partnered with the U of I McClure Center for Public Policy Research and the Idaho Rangeland Conservation Partnership to develop a program for three sessions focused on sharing knowledge and proficiency for facing drought and building resilience.

Several important resources were presented during the Forum. See major resources.

Day 1: On Drought and Resilience

The 2021 event began by examining how drought is a persistent reality of our western existence. Plenary speakers, Kit Kimball and Ed Galindo discussed how communities have adapted to periods of scarcity and variability with cultural, educational and political strategies.

Day 2: Facing Drought Challenges

A panel of speakers considered drought challenges and concerns from the perspectives of a rancher (Jim Hagenbarth); ecologist (Hailey Wilmer); economist (John Ritten) and wildlife habitat manager (Jason Pyron).

Day 3: Strategies for Survival

Speaker on the final day focused on strategies to adapt to drought. Considerations were addressed for livestock management and marketing (Mark Pratt); grass banks and rest pastures (Mike Courtney); grass response (Brendan Brazee); invasive species management (Lisa Jones), electronic tools to monitor conditions (Vincent Jansen) and grazing strategies (Michael Hale).
