M.B.A. program frequently asked questions
How long does the program take?
The MBA program requires 39 credit hours (13 courses). Students can complete the degree in as little as 12 months, though most finish within 15–24 months.
How many classes do MBA students typically take?
Since nearly all of our MBA students work full-time, course loads vary. About half of our students take one 3-credit course per 8-week term, finishing in about two years. The other half takes two courses per term and completes the program in 12–15 months. We generally recommend starting with one course in your first term, then adding a second course in future terms if you feel comfortable with the workload.
Does it matter what order I take the M.B.A. classes?
You can take your nine core courses and four electives in any order you choose. The sequence outlined in our online M.B.A. degree map is simply a suggested schedule. Many students prefer to start with a subject they are already comfortable with, or pair a more challenging course with a familiar topic when taking two classes in a single term.
Can I take a term off?
You can absolutely take a term off. The program is built for ultimate flexibility. For example, if early fall is a busy time at work, you can take that 8-week session off and return for the late fall session in mid-October. Also, if you register for both early and late fall courses but a life event occurs during the early session, you can drop the late session courses and receive a full tuition refund.
Are there any prerequisites?
University of Idaho’s online M.B.A. is uniquely streamlined and only requires one prerequisite class. Students should have completed at least one financial accounting course (or equivalent) at the undergraduate or graduate level. At University of Idaho, this is ACCT 2010: Introduction to Financial Accounting.
Students who have not yet completed this course may still be admitted and can begin M.B.A. courses while concurrently completing ACCT 2010.
What classes count toward the 12 credits of interdisciplinary electives?
In addition to the specialized M.B.A. electives offered each year, any 4000- or 5000-level course offered at University of Idaho can count toward your elective requirement. This exceptional flexibility allows you to customize your degree to align perfectly with your unique career goals.
Can I earn a concentration or certificate while earning my M.B.A.?
Yes. Most graduate certificates at University of Idaho require 12 credit hours. Students can pursue certificates in areas ranging from climate change to data science to nuclear safeguards and security. The 12 credit hours earned for a certificate can also fulfill your M.B.A. elective requirement, allowing you to graduate with both an M.B.A. and a certificate.
Use University of Idaho’s Degree Finder tool to search for available graduate certificates. Select “Certificate, graduate” under the degree level search option to view all U of I graduate certificates.
How much does the program cost?
Tuition is currently $885 per credit hour, regardless of when you take the class (spring, summer, or fall), your residency (in-state or out-of-state), or your enrollment status (full-time or part-time). This flexible tuition structure means you only pay for the courses you take.
If you drop a course before the drop deadline, you’ll receive a full refund. If you later decide to add a course (such as during the late 8-week session), you simply pay for that course at the time of registration. Non-M.B.A. classes may have a different rate and are listed on the university’s student billing page.
I’m a U of I alumnus. Do I get a discount?
Yes. As a U of I alumnus, you may “double count” up to six credit hours of 4000-level undergraduate coursework toward your M.B.A. This reduces your M.B.A. tuition by $5,310.
How much time per week can I expect to spend on a course?
The time commitment varies depending on your familiarity with the subject and your personal interest in the topic. A good guideline is to budget 8–12 hours per week per class (about 1–1.5 hours per day). After your first class or two, you’ll develop a clear sense of the workload and how to pace yourself for success.
What are the assignments like?
Assignments in the M.B.A. program are primarily case- and project-based rather than traditional quizzes or exams. Faculty assess your understanding of course concepts by asking you to apply them to real-world business challenges. Some courses include more teamwork than others, but all focus on analysis, application and professional relevance.
