Graduate application and deadlines
Graduate application materials and deadlines
Learn about the materials you’ll need to include with your application for grad school and the key deadlines you don’t want to miss.
Required graduate application documents
All applicants to graduate programs — whether domestic or international — must submit the following materials for admission consideration:
- Online application: Complete the graduate application form and submit the $50 non-refundable application fee. Apply online.
- Transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities: Unofficial transcripts (scanned copies of transcripts issued by the university Registrar) may be used for initial admission review. If admitted, official transcripts sent directly by the Registrar’s office are required.
- Standardized test scores: Some programs may require GRE scores; check specific program requirements found on each degree page.
- English proficiency: This is required for applicants whose post-secondary education is from a country where English is not an official language.
- Letters of recommendation: One to three letters of recommendation as specified on each degree page.
- Statement of purpose: Outline your academic and professional objectives.
- Resume/CV: Include significant academic and professional experience.
- Additional materials: Some programs may require additional materials such as a portfolio, writing sample, or statement of objectives. Find your degree to review degree-specific requirements.
Graduate application policies
- All application documents are subject to verification by the University of Idaho Graduate Admissions Office.
- All documents received by the Graduate Admissions Office for your graduate application become the property of University of Idaho and will not be released to anyone or any institution.
- All application information and supporting documents are screened for fraud, false identity, misrepresentation, alteration of original documents, or other inappropriate acts of omission and falsification. Submitting a fraudulent application will result in various actions, including, but not limited to, the withdrawal of the application, admission, funding, financial aid or scholarships awarded.
- University of Idaho evaluates credentials earned through formal academic training only. Applicants should not submit documentation of short-term professional development courses or other non-formal, non-academic training with their application, as such documents will not be evaluated or reflected in the U of I evaluation report.
- When applicable, applicants will be asked to submit proof of name change (example: a clear, legible photocopy of marriage certificate).
- An application and an application fee are only valid for the specific degree, major and semester. Any change in degree, major or semester before enrollment requires a new application and application fee.
- Complete graduate applications are reviewed by the academic department for admission recommendation. This process may take up to several weeks, depending on faculty schedule, application deadlines, program and faculty availability, available placement in the program, and other factors related to the academic department’s admission evaluation policies.
- Graduate Admissions will not disclose reasons for denial to an applicant. Graduate Admissions encourages prospective students to contact the academic department directly to inquire how they might improve their application for future admissions — the academic department may choose to disclose or not.
- Transferring credits from international institutions requires a course-by-course professional credential evaluation official report.

Submitting application materials
All application materials must be submitted via the online application portal.
Submitting test scores
- Official test scores (e.g., GRE, TOEFL) must be sent directly from the institution or testing center to Graduate Admissions.
- Use institution code 4843 when ordering test scores.
- Department codes:
- GRE: 5199 (default if needed)
- TOEFL: 99 (default if needed)
Note: All tests must have been taken within two years of your application submission date.
Letters of recommendation
The number of required letters of recommendation varies by program but most ask for one to three.
Before you apply, be sure to gather the names and email addresses those recommending you. You will enter this information into your online application.
Let your recommenders know ahead of time — they will receive an email with instructions to upload their letters directly.
Important:
- Use your recommenders' professional email address.
- Letters should be on university or company letterheads when possible.
- Recommendations should come from teaching or research faculty in your field or a supervisor who can speak to your qualifications.
Transcripts
An official academic record from all post-secondary education institutions attended is required. This may take some time so start this early in your application process.
In the instance that official records cannot be obtained, unofficial records may be used to consider your application.
Obtaining official transcripts
- International institutions: Find information on how to submit international official transcripts on the Degree Equivalency page.
- U.S. institutions:
- Transcripts must come directly from the awarding institution in a sealed envelope with the institution’s seal, stamp or signature.
- Electronic transcripts are accepted directly from U.S. institutions.
- Current or former U of I students: No need to request transcripts — Graduate Admissions will retrieve them.
Uploading transcripts to your application
- You may upload scanned copies of official transcripts and certified English translations through the online application.
- Scans must be high quality (600 dpi or higher, front and back, including grading keys/scales) from the university registrar’s office or original documents from your institution.
- These scans may be used for admission review but official transcripts will still be required if admitted.
