Family and consumer sciences programs work to improve the quality of life of adults, children and families — specifically through healthy lifestyles, nutrition, food safety and financial management.

Diabetes program
The Dining with Diabetes program helps people with Type 2 diabetes identify and understand important information about managing and preventing this disease. Classes are offered weekly for four weeks, with a three-month follow-up class. Participants will learn about diabetes and how to self-manage through menu planning, portion control, label reading and physical activity. Each class offers the opportunities to taste test diabetes-friendly recipes and gain support through group interaction.
Virtual cooking club
Join us from the comfort of your home for our free monthly Kids in the Kitchen Virtual Cooking Club. Open to youth of all ages and their families, each fun-filled session features simple, family-friendly recipes you and your child can make together at home. Learn essential cooking skills, nutrition tips and food safety while making delicious dishes together.
Home food preservation
Learn how to produce high quality preserved foods and the science behind food preservation and food safety.
Preserve at home
Preserve@Home is a six-week online class for individuals who want to can and preserve foods for their families. No prior knowledge is required. Register and pay online or contact Laura Sant at lsant@uidaho.edu or 208-852-1097 for more information.
Each lesson includes information that can be downloaded and printed, an online discussion board to facilitate interaction, a real-time chat with classmates and open book lesson quizzes to assess what you learned. If you receive a score of 70% or higher on the final exam, you will also receive a certificate of completion.
Eat Smart Idaho
Eat Smart Idaho provides nutrition and physical activity education for limited resource Idahoans. Eat Smart Idaho helps adults and families learn the basics of:
- healthy eating
- smart shopping
- food safety
- quick meal preparation
- management of limited grocery dollars
- increased levels of physical activity
Eat Smart Idaho is funded by two federal grants, allowing UI Extension to deliver free classes specifically for those with limited resources.
