    Health and wellbeing

Family and consumer sciences programs work to improve the quality of life of adults, children and families — specifically through healthy lifestyles, nutrition, food safety and financial management.

Programming in Nez Perce County focuses on healthy aging, mental health, poverty competency, food safety and preservation. Contact us at nezperce@uidaho.edu or 208-799-3096 for information on current classes and programs.

    Healthy aging

    What’s your quality-of-life plan?

We’ll discuss an American Association of Retired Persons study describing how older adults feel relationships, health, money and purpose affects their aging experience. We’ll also look at effects of positive and negative attitudes about our own aging.

Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?

Passing on non-titled or personal property is a process most of us will have to deal with at some time. Every person and every family and every situation is different. The experiences families have when deciding who gets what and why are also very different. We’ll discuss six key decision-making factors to consider when passing on personal possessions.

    Dementia friends

Dementia Friends is a global movement now underway in the United States. In this session you will learn what dementia is, five key messages about dementia, and how to effectively communicate with a person living with dementia.

    Understanding poverty

We’ll talk about where most people get their ideas about poverty, review some common myths and stereotypes about people who live in poverty and look at some impacts poverty has on older adults.

Home modifications for aging in place

Aging in place means living in our homes safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. The vast majority of homes we live in were not designed to meet that need. We’ll talk about some home modification methods and techniques to use in creating environments we can live in and enjoy throughout our lifespans.

Capture the flavor: herbs and spices

In this class we’ll look at the history, cultural use and health benefits of herbs and spices in food preparation, as well as best practices for storage and food safety when cooking with herbs and spices.

    Food safety and preservation

Home preservers who want to keep their food safe and nutritious should follow current methods. Information about food preservation and food safety is available at the UI Extension, Nez Perce County office.

    Pressure canner testing

Pressure canner dial gauges need testing yearly, and more often if you use your canner all year long. Bring your gauge to the UI Extension, Nez Perce County office for testing. We can test it within 24 hours, and sometimes even while you wait.
