Family and consumer sciences programs work to improve the quality of life of adults, children and families — specifically through healthy lifestyles, nutrition, food safety and financial management. The UI Extension, Ada County office offers a variety of programs.
Class policies
Our cancelation policy is as follows:
- Two weeks prior to class = full refund
- One week prior to class = in-house credit, no refund
- Less than one week prior to class = no credit, no refund

Solid finances
This is a series of free financial education webinars. The webinars are designed to empower you to take control of your finances by improving your knowledge of personal finance topics.
Topics range from money management, student loans and retirement to investor protection. Sessions are taught by faculty from University of Idaho, South Dakota State University and Montana State University. Once registered, past archived webinars may be accessed for viewing.
Healthy money habits
This free, five-week online program is in a non-meeting format. The instructor responds to topic questions or concerns by email and Facebook.

Financial strategies

Food safety and preservation
Food safety education maintains the health of Idaho residents by limiting outbreaks of foodborne illness. UI Extension, Ada County provides food safety training classes and in-person and telephone consultations. Submit food safety questions by email or call 208-287-5900.
Master food safety advisor
The Master Food Safety Advisor program teaches participants how to safely preserve food products with both online modules and hands-on formats. This program also teaches food safety, food storage and more.
Advanced master food safety advisor
The Advanced Master Food Safety Advisor program is for those who have completed Master Food Safety Advisor training and volunteer requirements. It provides ongoing monthly educational sessions in food safety and preservation. The recertification fee is $25. Please email Nikki Telford for more information.

Diabetes prevention program
The Diabetes Prevention Program aims to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in those that are high risk, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program is designed for people with pre-diabetes, as well as those who are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes.
