Positive youth development

4‑H in Idaho helps youth learn the life skills they need to be the leaders of tomorrow. We are developing citizenship, leadership and responsibility in Idaho youth through experiential learning and a positive youth development approach, with a focus on agriculture, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), civic engagement and healthy living topics.

Youth ages 5-18 can become a member of a 4‑H club, attend various camps, participate in afterschool programs and grow as leaders through district and statewide events and opportunities. Our programs are designed to spark curiosity and build lifelong skills — whether you’re new to 4‑H or a returning member, there’s always something new to explore.

What is 4-H?

4‑H is America’s largest youth development organization, with over 6.5 million members nationwide — and thousands here in Idaho. In 4‑H, youth build confidence and gain lifelong skills. Through hands-on learning in clubs, camps and community programs, Idaho youth explore their passions, connect with others and make a difference — in a safe, welcoming environment.

In Idaho, 4‑H can be found in all 44 counties and three federally recognized tribes, delivered through University of Idaho Extension.

4-H programs across Idaho are managed by local 4‑H educators and coordinators in UI Extension offices who tailor programming to meet community interests and needs. Before enrolling for the first time, contact your local UI Extension office to learn about projects and programs offered in your area that suit your family’s schedule. Once you are paired with a club that offers projects your youth is interested in, 4-H professionals will guide you through the enrollment process.

Clubs and projects

4-H clubs are a building block of the 4-H experience. A 4-H club is a group of youth and caring adult volunteers who explore shared interests through projects, which are usually completed over several weeks or months. Projects are centered on an area of focus, like animal science, creative arts, food and cooking, technology and more. Learn more about 4-H clubs and projects.

Programs

In addition to 4‑H clubs, we also offer shorter-term programs on specific topics. 4‑H members from across the state come together to learn, lead and make new friends through local, regional and state programs. State and national events

In Idaho, 4-H'ers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of statewide and national events every year. These events are designed to inspire, challenge and connect you with the broader 4-H community. Discover state and national events.

Volunteers
