Director's Message
It’s time to join 4-H!
October is the first month of the traditional 4-H year. It is the time in which most clubs start to reorganize and accept new members.
Many of you know that 4-H can be a life-changing experience for young people. You may even know a child that could benefit from the UI Extension 4-H Youth Development program. Please help them and their parents join a 4-H club or activity. You can help them by showing them where to enroll or who to contact at their local UI Extension office.
Know Your Government (KYG)
Each February for the past 30 years, 4-H members have descended on the Idaho Capitol to learn how a bill becomes law and how to argue a case in front of the courts. KYG has been a launching point for many young people as they learn the civic responsibility of making our society successful through civic engagement.
We fundraise to keep the cost to the 4-H members at a minimum. This year we are trying crowdfunding for this event for the first time. Please take a minute to reflect and consider helping send another great group of youth to Boise for this educational experience.
Youth need their entire community to succeed. Be a part of the future by helping grow true leaders.

Discovering Drones
Teens in Valley County are getting first-person flying lessons aimed at getting youth excited about science and math as part of a new drone camp offered by University of Idaho Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The Business of Food
Carly Weaver has always had a head for business.
When she was 13 she turned a University of Idaho Extension 4-H dairy heifer project from a break-even endeavor into a $1,500 profit. That experience sparked a love for business. Combined with her background in agriculture, Weaver is now on the path to a promising marketing career.
Chobani Scholars
The new Chobani Scholars program at the University of Idaho is a $20,000 multi-year scholarship open to students who intend to pursue a career in dairy production. Successful applicants should have ties to the dairy industry and must be from Idaho, with preference to students from the Magic Valley. Application deadline is Dec. 1.
Elements & Principles of Design
UI Extension 4-H Youth Development educators Maureen Toomey, Erika Jeffries and Judith McShane have authored a new publication, Elements & Principles of Design. This informational card provides a visual reference for both youth and adults learning about visual art and is intended to be part of 4-H art curriculum. This piece is a 4-H national peer reviewed publication.
